Please find a very nice copy of: "The Salmon and Salmon Fisheries of Alaska" which are the: "Report of the Alaskan Salmon Investigations of the United States Fish Commission, Steamer Albatross in 1900 and 1901," by Jefferson F. Moser, Commander, United States Navy, Commanding. Please see the photo of the Itinerary of the vessel during these investigations. The book is very well illustrated with vintage b&w photos about the salmon fishery, those who pursue it and also many diagrams and some fold-out maps of different sites being considered for the feasibility of a salmon fishery. Condition: This book is in very good condition. The hard covers have a few tiny blemishes and are bumped, especially along the bottom edge. Inside, the book is unmarked and the pages, plates, maps and diagrams are all clean and bright without toning or foxing. I should add, however, the photo of Plate XII was actually cut out of the book. Both hinges are intact and the binding is tight and sound. This book is not ex-library or a remainder. Bright blue textured cloth with blind stamped ruling and decorative marks, spine has gilt title and date. Some general grubbiness to covers with a bit of bumping, old beverage ring on back cover but still respectable. Interior sewing is showing but binding seems firm, some occasional minor foxing, one page has an old mark (looks like something was wiped off which abraded a bit of text, although still legible), a few pages have page-turn chips, otherwise clean and unmarked. "The main features of the work of the Albatross during the summer of 1900 were a continuation of the exploration and examination of the stream and lake systems of Alaska, their general features and characteristics so far as they relate to salmon and other fishes, spawning-grounds, condition and nature of the water, . At the canneries statistics were obtained of the streams fished by them, and detailed statistics relating to the men, vessels, boats, and apparatus employed in the fisheries, together with the catch and pack of the various species for the years 1898, 1899 and 1900." A valuable look at an almost vanished world, over 100 years ago. While the 1899 edition is somewhat available, there are very few original copies of the 1902 report.
