Beautifully bound in publisher's half brown morocco leather with green-brown marbled boards, raised bands, gilt decorative compartments, and gilt top edges; marbled endpapers. A deluxe production illustrated with engraved plates: "168 designs, comprising reproductions of rare old engravings, steel plates, photogravures and curious facsimiles," supervised by Frederic Courtland Penfield. Pages remain UNOPENED, indicating the set was never fully read. Volumes present: VII, XII, XIII, XIV, XV, XVI, XVIII, XIX, covering General History, the Russian Empire, the French Empire, Louis XIV, the War of 1741, Essays, Short Studies, and selections from the Philosophical Dictionary. Condition: Very Good to Near Fine. Leather bright with light rubbing to extremities; joints sound; interiors clean and remarkably fresh with unopened signatures?rare thus. Collector's Note: The 1901 DuMont edition of The Works of Voltaire is considered one of the most elegant American sets produced at the turn of the century. Edited by noted statesman and critic John Morley and translated by William F. Fleming, this edition helped popularize Enlightenment literature in the English-speaking world. Surviving sets in half-morocco deluxe bindings are scarce; surviving sets with pages still unopened are exceedingly uncommon. The engraved plates supervised by F.C. Penfield add significant aesthetic and historical value. Even as a partial set, these eight volumes present handsomely on the shelf and offer collectors an opportunity to acquire Voltaire in a distinguished early American format. Additional pictures are gladly provided on request. Book(s) will be carefully wrapped and boxed securely for safe handling during transit, with international shipping available. Seller will provide full shipping insurance at no additional cost to the buyer. This set would make an excellent addition to any collector's library.
