Aus der Beschäftigung Morgensterns mit dem 1928 von John von Neumann veröffentlichten Artikel "Zur Theorie der Gesellschaftsspiele" erwuchs nach dem Zusammentreffen der beiden Wissenschaftler 1939 an der Princeton University nicht nur eine lebenslange Freundschaft. Vielmehr entstand aus ihrer Zusammenarbeit einer der bedeutendsten Beiträge zur Wirtschaftstheorie im 20. Jahrhundert: Mit der "Theory of Games and Economic Behavior" (1944) schufen sie die Grundlage für die ökonomische Anwendung der Spieltheorie. Erstmals war es damit gelungen, eine Theorie über interaktives Verhalten in ein Modell zu gießen. Die Spieltheorie überträgt mit Hilfe der Mathematik Erkenntnisse über das menschliche Verhalten bei Spielen wie Schach oder Poker auf die Wirtschaft. Erste deutsche Ausgabe des Gründungswerks der Spieltheorie. - Morgenstern (1902-1977) studierte bei von Mises und war Nachfolger Hayeks als Direktor des Instituts für Konjunkturforschung in Wien. Er entstammt also der Österreichischen Schule, der - wie die meisten Vertreter der Schule - in die USA emigrierte. John von Neumann (1903-1957) ist ungarischer Herkunft, eigentlich Mathematiker und gilt als einer der Väter der Informatik. Beide gelten aufgrund der vorliegenden Veröffentlichung als Entwickler der sog. Spieltheorie. Die amerikanische Originalausgabe trug den Titel "Theory of Games and Economic Behavior" und erschien zuerst 1943. Eine zweite Auflage folgte 1946. Nach der dritten Originalausgabe von 1953 folgte die vorliegende Übertragung ins Deutsche.
