Former Governor of New York and U.S. Senator Edward Denison Morgan (1811-1883) scrawled and signed this letter on September 2, 1880 on a sheet of United States Hotel of Saratoga, NY stationery. In the letter, Morgan writes to his friend David F. Merritt, discussing several financial transactions,…his plans to leave Saratoga on Saturday morning via the Saratoga Express, and something he refers to as "Sellecks Bill". He writes, "I want to know about this $500, Sellecks Bill, before advancing for a year, I shall pay for the Boys Education out of their money for a year, But it ought to be 1/2 year in advance instead of a year in case of death &c." There is also a postscipt in his hand which he initials. Edwin D. Morgan served as the 21st Governor of New York (1859-1862) and as a Senator from New York (1863-1869). He was one of the founders of the Republican Party and served as the chairman of the Republican National Committee (1856-1864 and 1872-1876). Morgan was also a major general of volunteers in the Union Army during the American Civil War. Written on two sides of a 9" x 6" sheet of paper. Condition: Fold lines, a few light ink splotches, otherwise very good condition with a bold signature. Signed by Author(s).

Morgan also served as the first chairman of the Republican National Committee (1872-1876) and as a Union Army general during the Civil War. Written on one side of a folded piece of 7 ¼" x 8 ¾" stationery. Condition: Fold lines, light overall soil, mounting remnants on verso, otherwise good condition with a bold signature.
