Paperback. Zustand: New. Language: English. About the Book:- The Chief sources of information regarding the early history of civil society are first, the study of races in their primitive condition; and, second, the study of the symbols employed by advanced nations in the constitution or exercise of civil rights. From these studies pursued together, we obtain to a large extent, the power of classifying social phenomena as more or less archaic and thus of connecting and arranging in their order the stages of human advancement. The book is devided into the following chapters, namely, Legal Symbolism and Primitive Life, The form of capture in Marriage Ceremonies, The Origin of the form of capture, On the Prevalence of the Practice of capturing Wives, de facto, Of the rule against Marriage between members of the same Tribe, On the state of Hostility, Exogamy: its Origin-Comparative Archaism of Exogamy and Endogamy, Ancient System of Kinship, and their Influence on the Structure of the Primitive Groups, The Decay of Exogamy. About the Autor:-John Ferguson McLennan FRSE LLD (14 October 1827 16 June 1881), was a Scottish advocate, social anthropologist and ethnologist. He was born in Inverness, the son of John McLennan, an insurance agent, and his wife, Jessie Ross. He was educated in that city, then studied law at King's College, Aberdeen, graduating M.A. in 1849. In 1865, McLennan published Primitive Marriage. In it he argued from symbolic and ceremonial forms of bride kidnapping (see also Types of marriage). His ideas had been partially anticipated by Johann Jakob Bachofen, writing in 1861 on matriarchy, but were independent. McLennan developed from ethnographic data a social evolutionist theory of marriage, and also of systems of kinship according to natural laws. He rejected patriarchal society as an early stage, arguing in favour of agnation as a more basic evolutionary point; he proposed an early model of social groups, a war band mainly male, practicing female infanticide and acquiring female sexual partners, with promiscuity and matrilineality salient features. The Title 'PRIMITIVE MARRIAGE: AN INQUIRY INTO THE ORIGIN OF THE FORM OF CAPTURE IN MARRIAGE CEREMONIES written/authored/edited by JOHN F. M'LENNAN', published in the year 2022. The ISBN 9788121262729 is assigned to the Paperback version of this title. This book has total of pp. 338 (Pages). The publisher of this title is Gyan Publishing House. This Book is in English. In den WarenkorbThe Novar Estate extends to 20000 acres. At the time of the present plan its proprietor was Viscount Novar, a Liberal politician who had been the sixth Governor-General of Australia. For centuries Novar was considered a 'barren and treeless place', and forestry played a significant part in its exploitation. A later laird of Novar, A. B. L. Munro-Ferguson, himself took a degree in forestry, and employed the celebrated Archie Munro as head forester (see his obituary in the Sunday Herald, 22 November 1997). In brown cloth 'Anti-Aqua' binder. Inscription on internal card cover by the author 'John M. Ross, | Drummondreach. | Conon-Bridge. | Ross-shire.' Comprising typed 'Working-Plan' ([2] + 29pp., foolscap 8vo), followed by manuscript tables of crop yields at various locations ([3] + 15pp., foolscap 8vo), and seven (out of nine) small photographs of Novar, with captions, mounted on three pages. The present item was clearly prepared as part of Ross's degree-work, as he is described in the 1933 University of Aberdeen Calendar as a 'student in forestry', and the typescript carries a few pencil annotations by a tutor. Confirming the academic origin of the item is the following introductory note to it: 'During the Easter Vacation of 1932 in collaboration with Mr. G. I. Mackenzie, I collected data for a plan of some 1000 acres of the Novar Estate in Ross-shire and completed the plan during May June.' (Mackenzie was a subsequently a senior figure in the Forestry Commission in Scotland, retiring in 1969.) The typewritten 'Working-Plan' is divided into five parts: 'General Description' (in 10 subsections: Situation; Area Statement; Boundaries; Tenure; Physiography; Geology and Soils; Meteorological Data; Summary Description; Probable Production; Risks), 'Arguments, Prescriptions and Procedure' (Object of Management; Allocation of Area; Prescriptions for Next Decade; Future Position; Forest Protection), 'Exploitation Programme (Detailed for the next five years)' (table of 'Fellings' and 'Thinnings (1st 5 years of decade'); Out-turn; Transport; Disposal; Sawmills) and 'Regeneration Programme' (tables of Afforestation and Replanting for next 5 years' and 'Underplanting (1934-1937)'; Supply of Plants); 'Organisation and Finance' (Establishment; Finance; Control and Revision of the Plan). Of particular interest is the 'Summary Description', pp.5-9, describing the situation at various 'Non-Timbered Areas' ('Unafforestable Areas' and 'Afforestable Areas') and 'Timbered Areas' (Meann Cnoc; Bog a Phiobaire; Badger Hill; Templepark; Fyrish; Tendallon; Black Park). The fifteen pages of manuscript tables describe 'Locality Factors' (Elevation; Soil; Vegetation) and 'Present Crop (Species Age and Height; Growing Condition; Treatment) at nine locations: Meann Cnoc; Bog a Phiobaire; Badger Hill; Templepark; Broomhill; Bullocheshan; Fyrish Hill; Tendallon; Black Park. The table for Black Park covers six pages. Each of the nine tables is preceded by a short description, that of the first, Meann Cnoc, reading: 'This squatdomed hill rises from 500 to 1000 feet, slopes steeply to the south and north and gently to the east and west. Exposed to N. W. and N. E. winds. Soil good deep loam in lower southern part, deteriorating with altitude. Northern slopes are bare owing to unfavourable exposure.' The final two leaves in the volume are of black paper, and on these are mounted seven small black and white photographs of the nine locations in the tables. The photographs for the other two locations are lacking. Each is captioned in white ink (for example, 'Broom Hill. From bare area on North of Meann Cnoc'). Loosely inserted is a neat manuscript manuscript map, 50 x 39 cm, in colours, with key, of 'Woods of the Novar Estate Fyrish Section', 'Scale - 6 inches = 1 mile'. The colour key features 'Age Classes', Area to be Afforested' and 'Area to be Replanted', with 'Unafforestable Area Uncoloured'. Other features are 'Section Boundaries', '1st Class Roads' and '2nd Class Roads'.
