Hardcover. Zustand: Very Good. Hardcover. First edition of this work, which remains one of the few first person accounts of the fur trade in the early 19th century. It is still considered a major source for historians. John McLean (c. 17991890) was a Scotsman who emigrated to British North America, where he became a fur-trapper, trader, explorer, grocer, banker, newspaperman, clerk, and author. He traveled by foot and canoe from the Atlantic to the Pacific and back, becoming one of the chief traders of the Hudson's Bay Company. He is also remembered as the first person of European descent to discover Churchill Falls on Canada's Churchill River and sometimes mistakenly credited as the first to cross the Labrador Peninsula [Wikipedia]. Bound in quarter brown leather with black pebbled leather covers. Brown leather is rubbed and chipped, covers have bumped corners. Free front endpapers in both volumes are loose as is the title page in volume II. Some raggedness to the fore edge of a few pages in each volume not affecting text. Bookplate of the Earl of Orrery affixed to front pastedown of each volume. Very good condition. Small octavo. Volume I: 308 pages; Volume II: 328 pages.

Sabin 43514: "Depicts with great fidelity and vivacity the manners and condition, the toils, privations, and perils of the Indian hunters. It also includes several interesting geographical and geological facts and Indian vocabularies." Field 996: "Much the largest portion is devoted to the narration of incidents of travel among the Indians of the territory." Lande 1322: "Faithful picture of the Indian trader's life." Streeter sale 3712: "In a very entertaining style, M'Lean tells just how the Hudson Bay Company operated. The author entered service with the company in 1821 and spent the next eleven or twelve years in their stations in Ontario, on the Ottawa River, at Le Chate, and at Fort Coulonge. He then traveled west to Fort St. James on Stuart's lake in British Columbia. Later he served din Labrador and as far north as Fort Good Hope." Siebert sale 861: "M'Lean served in British Columbia and describes Indian traders and hunters." Very good. Later polished three-quarter tan calf (a little old staining to spine), and marbled boards, morocco spine labels, t.e.g., by Sangorski & Sutcliffe. (3709).

John McLean worked for the Hudson?s Bay Company from 1821 to 1846. His long service took him to a number of remote and wild outposts in the Ottawa River Area, the Western Department on the Pacific Coast, the Northern Department and the Ungava District.   By the time he took charge of the Ungava District (c. 1838) he was desperate to gain further promotions and sought to make a success of the area by developing ?an economic overland communication route between Fort Chimo and Fort Smith on Hamilton Inlet? (Dictionary of Canadian Biography). His hunger for advancement led to a series of exploratory trips into the interior and, while economically fruitless, those missions saw him become the first European (McLean was born on the Isle of Mull, Scotland) to witness parts of Labrador such as Grand (later, ?Churchill?) Falls. Due to the aforementioned unprofitability of McLean?s endeavours he failed to attain the recognition he so desired and subsequently retired from the Company in June, 1846.     During the first years of his retirement he wrote this remarkable book, which contains a clear-eyed critical reflection on his work for the Company and a record of his explorations. The criticisms of the Company are particularly interesting and go well beyond the settling of personal gripes; extending to a well articulated argument against the Company?s treatment of native Canadians.   It ?? remains one of the few firsthand accounts of the of the fur trade and the administration of Governor George Simpson? (DCB).   While COPAC records only 8 copies in UK institutions, OCLC lists numerous copies in North America.

First edition, two volumes, 8vo, 308; 328 pp. Some occasional mild soiling and browning. Recent maroon half morocco, marbled sides, gilt spines with black labels, a very good copy.
