Bound in maroon buckram with leather title label with gilt lettering to each spine, all edges marbled. All vols VG copies, bindings square and tight, cloth covers clean, some gentle sunning to spines, title labels a little rubbed and worn, some light foxing and damp staining to prelims, otherwise internally very good. Contemporary ink name on vol.1 original ffep, along with a different name to each title page verso deleted. From the private library of English Establishment artist Sir Lawrence Gowing (1918-1991), although no indication of provenance appears in the book. It was likely acquired from his first wife, English writer and Bloomsbury group member Julia Strachey (1901-1979), as many of his older books were.

All volumes rebound in brown leather with gilt printing and decorations on spines and the seal of Trinity College, Dublin stamped in gilt on both covers. Page edges gilt. Square spines and corners with tight bindings on volumes 2-6. The spine on volume 1 is detached but connected to back and front cover so the book can still be read and looks normal on the shelf. There is a bookplate on front pastedwon on all volumes along with offset to front and back endpages on all volumes. Some wear to a couple corners. Still an attractive set. Photos upon request.
