Wrappers foxed and worn with some shelf-wear to the extremities present. Foxing present to the wrappers. Text is clean and free of marks. Binding tight and solid. A collection of four plays by contemporary playwright, screenwriter, and director Ron Milner. Much of Black literature from the 1940s through the 1960s deals with the search for identity and asks the question, Should Blacks define themselves in relationship to white people and white culture? In dramatizing the struggles and desires of the Black working class and lower middle class, renowned Detroit playwright Ron Milner responds to this question by letting Black culture - Black music in particular - be not only his subject but part of his form of expression and way of being in the world. Vintage tear sheet advertisement for the 1969 off-Broadway production, from an unknown publication, circa 1969. The production ran from July 30 through November 2, 1969, at Tambellini's Gate Theatre on Second Avenue and Tenth Street in New York City. A watershed production for Black avant-garde and independent theatre, "A Black Quartet" presented four one-act plays by four Black playwrights: "Prayer Meeting or, The First Militant Minister" by Ben Caldwell; "The Warning: A Theme for Linda" by Ronald Milner; "Great Goodness of Life (A Coon Show)" by Amiri Baraka (then known as Leroi Jones), and "The Gentleman Caller" by Ed Bullins. Produced by noted African-American stage director and producer Woodie King Jr., who would go on to found the New Federal Theatre a year later, in 1970. 4.5 x 12 inches, trimmed irregularly. About Fine, with minute wear along the left edge.
