Populations of the gastropods Littorina rudis and L. arcana on the rocky shore at Westdale, Pembroke, South Wales, have been investigated. Foot area has been related to shell length. It is shown that there are differences in the areas of the expanded foot of different groups of snails: those from more exposed sites have a relatively larger foot. Littorina arcana achieves the greatest foot area of all, and it extends on to the most exposed rocks investigated, where L. rudis is absent. It is suggested that this may be important in ecological separation of the two species. It is noted that there is still uncertainty over the taxonomic identity of what is referred to here as 'Littorina rudis', and further work is in progress. 8 pp., 2 figs, gr. 8.

The sibling marine snails Littorina obtusata (L.) and Littorina mariae Sacchi & Rastelli are sympatrically distributed and the shells of both species are subject to similar breaking forces by predatory crabs. Nevertheless, the two species exhibit rather different growth and defence strategies. To determine growth patterns, we measured changes in five morphological variables with increasing shell length: body whorl thickness at the point of crushing force application, shell height (related to globosity), shell mass, body mass, and apertural lip thickness. We also measured ontogenetic changes in the ability to withstand shell crushing. For most morphological variables, L. mariae showed uniformly allometric growth of juveniles into adults. In contrast, L. obtusata usually exhibited a distinct change in growth pattern upon reaching maturity. As adults, L. mariae showed a more sustained increase in overall shell mass and in body whorl thickness (defence against crushing attacks) and also had proportionally thicker apertural lips (defence against peeling attacks). Littorina obtusata, however, grew to a larger size and their shells could accommodate larger bodies at all sizes. Furthermore, the strength of L. obtusata shells increased faster than could be accounted for by either overall shell mass or thickness at the point of force application, suggesting strengthening by other means such as changes in shell microstructure or shape (other than globosity). These results illustrate the viability of two contrasting antipredator strategies, despite a highly similar phylogenetic history and selective regime. 16 pp., 3 figs, 6 tabs, gr. 8.

Shell shape in gastropods is generated by the spiral path of shell material laid down at the aperture. Many aspects of shape will therefore be associated. Such associations may indicate constraints, limiting the range of variation seen in populations as a response to different environmental pressures. Associations of shell variables were studied using the sibling species Littorina saxatilis and Littorina arcana. The same closely associated subset of three variables was found in both species, related to the maintenance of a constant aperture shape, despite variation in overall morphology. These closely associated variables describe similar variation in the two species. The less closely associated variables may contribute more to inter-specific differences. 10 pp., 8 figs, 4.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Members of the gastropod family Littorinidae are common throughout the world. They form a very abundant component of many intertidal and shallow subtidal ecosystems and, by their grazing, often play a central role in shaping these communities. They also display a wide range of life history strategies and many are polymorphic, making them attractive model organisms for ecologists, evolutionary biologists and physiologists alike. Areas of particular interest include ecological interactions with other animals and with algae, the effects of pollutants and the use of littorinids as sentinel species for monitoring pollution, the effects of parasites on growth and ecology, taxonomy, and the study of genotypic/phenotypic responses to environmental factors. There is still much to be done, and the littorinids are proving to be an ideal group on which to work. Audience: Primarily targeted at the research level. Will also provide useful information for advanced first-degree students conducting research projects.

Zustand: Hervorragend. Zustand: Hervorragend | Seiten: 912 | Sprache: Englisch | Produktart: Bücher | The book presents surveys describing recent developments in most of the primary subfields of General Topology, and its applications to Algebra and Analysis during the last decade, following the previous editions (North Holland, 1992 and 2002). The book was prepared in connection with the Prague Topological Symposium, held in 2011. During the last 10 years the focus in General Topology changed and therefore the selection of topics differs from that chosen in 2002. The following areas experienced significant developments: Fractals, Coarse Geometry/Topology, Dimension Theory, Set Theoretic Topology and Dynamical Systems.
