In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first printing, in the scarce and attractive jacket, of this novel concerning a little girl adopted into an "artistic, colorful, temperamental, strongly individualistic" theatrical and musical family, the matriarch of which was a personal friend of Liszt, Puccini and Strauss. Cram was a popular author of the 1920s and 1930s, and many of her works were adapted for films - notably her short story which served as the basis for Love Affair (1939) and its two remakes in 1957 (as An Affair to Remember) and 1994. Her most enduring literary works is probably the romantic novella Forever, published 1935, claimed to have been a favourite book of Tyrone Power and Judy Garland. The title of Madder Music is taken from Ernest Dowson's Cynara poem (1894), from the line "I cried for madder music and for stronger wine". Octavo. Original orange cloth, titles and musical note decoration to spine and front. With dust jacket. Cloth bright with only very slight rubbing to extremities, some trivial spotting to endpapers, otherwise an excellent copy in the somewhat spotted, dust-soiled and edge-torn jacket with small chips to corners, a scratch to the front panel, and a couple of small tape repairs.
