Erstausgabe
First appearance in print of this account of travelling through Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang) and across the Gobi Desert, by the first female individual winner of the Royal Central Asian Society's prestigious Lawrence of Arabia Memorial Medal. Issues of the society's journal from the 1930s are now exceptionally scarce in commerce in any condition. In her account, given as a lecture to the society on 6 October 1937, Mildred Cable (1878-1952) discusses the course of what would prove to be her last expedition across Central Asia. She describes journeying to the region through the Soviet Union, travel by car along the new highways, and listening to a young boy denounce imperialism in a speech at the New Year festivities in Urumqi. She also points to the impact of changing social attitudes: "In past years we had often rubbed our eyes, to make sure that we were not dreaming an Arabian Night's dream, as we wandered about in the palaces of the Khans, sat with the princesses, and sauntered in the gardens. But now it was much more amazing to see such girls as we had met in those palaces walking through the streets not only veilless but marching like girl guides to take their part on the sports ground" (p. 16). In 1942, Cable was awarded the Lawrence Medal for her pioneering work exploring the Gobi Desert. Large octavo, pp. 9-21 within the journal. Original red card wrappers, front cover lettered in black. With 2 half-tone plates, folding map. Tide marks on spine, wrappers toned, split at head of front outer hinge neatly repaired, contents and plates creased by damp, map bright.
