Cover and frontispiece design by Zdenek Rykr, the author s husband, who was a renowned painter and designer. Milada Soucková (1898-1983) was one of the earliest Czech writers to use the stream-of-consciousness techniques in her fiction. In 1936 she joined the Prague linguistic circle. After WWII she was the Czech cultural attaché in Washington and remained to emigrate permanently after the communist putsch in 1948. She became a librarian and held prominent positions in universities from the 1960s and is credited for amassing one of the largest Czech book collections outside of Czechoslovakia at Harvard s Widener Library.
