Barcode sticker on back board. The author was a pioneering scholar in Holocaust studies and the founder of the first Center for Holocaust Documentation and Research in the United States. She was a professor of history and literature in the Department of Judaic Studies at Brooklyn College. She was a member of President Carter's Holocaust Commission. She is probably best known for creating the "Tower of Faces" made up by 1,500 photographs for permanent display at the US Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. A detailed history of the town and Jewish population of Eishyshok in Lithuania, where almost 5, 000 Jews were killed in September of 1941. Written by one of twenty-nine survivors of the town's original five founding families, the author researched each Eishyshok family and their wartime experiences; whether they died, immigrated, hid, or survived the occupation. A 900-year history of the culture and folklore of the shtetl Eishyshok. As well as a testament to a victimized people, the book is a living history-the author lived in Eishyshok until the age of four when the Nazis murdered all the inhabitants except for herself and a few others who escaped. .
