A comprehensive work on Worthing and its numerous historical attributes and modern amenities (ancient times, natural history, administration, borough engineering, transport, music, art etc), each section being written by a well known local writer. The book was published on the occasion of the 43rd Congress of the South Eastern Union of Scientific Societies, held at Worthing 25th June, 1938. Also included is an early 20th century copy of Bacon'd Map of the Environs of Worthing for Cyclists and Tourists, a fold out colour map. Condition: The book is in very good condition, with tanning to the endpapers, and the wrapper with light edgewear but now in a protective sleeve. The map is in good, used condition.

First edition. 271pp. The Mende are one of the two largest ethnic groups in Sierra Leone and belong to a larger group of Mande peoples who live throughout West Africa. Mende is a major language of Sierra Leone, with some speakers in neighboring Liberia. It is spoken by the Mende people and by other ethnic groups as a regional lingua franca in southern Sierra Leone. In southern Sierra Leone, it is the regional lingua franca that allows all tribes to communicate. The author of this early description of the langauge was Transport Officer, Gold Coast Colony. The book is bound in the original brown cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with shelf wear and some light soiling on the boards. The spine ends and corners are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with no inscription.

Most of Migeod's papers are on West African languages and linguistics but one is on an archaeological find and another e breif reply to a Peake paper on Homer. Futher details available on request. He was posted to to the Gold Coast in 1900, where he remained until 1919, after which time he undertook a series of expeditions to Lake Chad, Sierra Leone and Cameroon, which he recounts here.

The author necessarily makes several generalisations on the grammatical structures of the thirty three languages studied, though pays specific attention to the Hausa language.

The primary focus of the work is ethnographic, although the author does include a substantial amount of natural history.
