    Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. 1st Edition. The First UK printing published by Jonathan Cape, London in 1989 of this illustrated edition. The BOOK is in near Fine condition with some very light pushing to the spine tips and some light toning to the text-block. The WRAPPER is compete and is in near Fine condition. The wrapper is protected in a removable Brodart archival cover. Striking illustrations, which comprise endpaper decorations, ten full-page or double-spread drawings, and scores and scores of vignettes, decorations and illustrations in the text by John Vernon Lord. The book has been inscribed by John Vernon Lord to the front illustrated end-paper : 'To Bill and Mary, After a marvellous visit to Heswall - rambling among genealogy & the Wirral, ferrying across the Mersey and treading the pavements of Jordan Street, visiting sundry educational establishments in Wales and England, eating and drinking well, plus many conversations amongst the sniffing and trotting to and fro of Rocky and Misty. Lots of love from John and Denie, 29 November 2002'. Loosely inserted is a large postcard ('The Chimpanzebra from Who's Who 1977') which has been H/W from John Vernon Lord to the same recipient Mary (Pyke). In which Lord has transcribed an extract from a Walt Whitman's poem 'Song of Myself'. He continues to add : 'We are still thinking of that wonderful stay with you. Love to Misty and Rocky, and of course Bill, lots of love John (Member of the Rice-pudding clan!)'. In a separate envelope which has been addressed in the illustrator's handwriting to to same recipients 'Bill and Mary', are 12 various large postcards (all clean) with John Vernon Lord Illustrations. 'John Vernon Lord is an illustrator, author and teacher. He is widely recognised for his illustrations of various texts such as 'Aesop's Fables', 'The Nonsense Verse of Edward Lear' and the 'Folio Society's Myths and Legends of the British Isles'. He has also illustrated classics of English literature, including the works of Lewis Carroll and James Joyce. Lord has written and illustrated several children's books, which have been published and translated into several languages. His book 'The Giant Jam Sandwich' has been in print since 1972' (Wiki). In 1990 his illustrations for this title 'Aesop s Fables' won the overall prize in the V&A / W.H. Smith Illustration' Awards. In 2018 his illustrations for 'Ulysses' won the V&A Illustration Award for Book Illustration and the winner of the 2018 Moira Gemmill Illustrator of the Year Prize . He was head of various departments, including the Head of the School of Design, at Brighton Art School, Polytechnic and University. He was Professor of Illustration at the University of Brighton from 1986-99, where he is now Professor Emeritus. An Honorary D.Litt. was conferred upon him by the University of Brighton in 2000. He was the chair of the Graphic Design Board of the Council for National Academic Awards from 1981-84. A very uncommon title more-so with such attributes. More images available on request.
