Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Ecologists are increasingly tackling difficult issues like global change, loss of biodiversity and sustainability of ecosystem services. These and related questions are enormously challenging, requiring unprecedented multidisciplinary collaboration and rapid synthesis of large amounts of diverse data into information and ultimately knowledge. New sensors, computers, data collection and storage devices and analytical and statistical methods provide a powerful tool kit to support analyses, graphics and visualisations that were unthinkable even a few years ago. New and increased emphasis on accessibility, management, processing and sharing of high-quality, well-maintained and understandable data represents a significant change in how scientists view and treat data. These issues are complex and, despite their importance, are typically not addressed in database, ecological and statistical textbooks.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware -This book introduces readers to ecological informatics as an emerging discipline that takes into account the data-intensive nature of ecology, the valuable information to be found in ecological data, and the need to communicate results and inform decisions, including those related to research, conservation and resource management. At its core, ecological informatics combines developments in information technology and ecological theory with applications that facilitate ecological research and the dissemination of results to scientists and the public. Its conceptual framework links ecological entities (genomes, organisms, populations, communities, ecosystems, landscapes) with data management, analysis and synthesis, and communicates new findings to inform decisions by following the course of a loop.In comparison to the 2nd edition published in 2006, the 3rd edition of Ecological Informatics has been completely restructured on the basis of the generic conceptual framework provided in Figure 1. It reflects the significant advances in data management, analysis and synthesis that have been made over the past 10 years, including new remote and in situ sensing techniques, the emergence of ecological and environmental observatories, novel evolutionary computations for knowledge discovery and forecasting, and new approaches to communicating results and informing decisions.Springer Verlag GmbH, Tiergartenstr. 17, 69121 Heidelberg 492 pp. Englisch.

He meets many people, both service men and the original inhabitants, and hears their stories - the remittance man who lived among the Japanese and, radioed their movements until one fatal and dramatic morning; Bloody Mary, the Tonkinese woman who introduced her daughter to a young Marine lieutenant; Emile de Becque, the French planter who fell in love with an American nurse; Tony Fry, the individualist who fought a very personal war in his own very effective way; Lieutenant Bill Harbison, who lived like a hero but turned out to be a louse; and the young enlisted man from Ohio who was going to pieces on one of the islands until a Sea Bee gave him a reason for living.Because Mr. Michener was there, he is able to reproduce exactly the mood and atmosphere of the early critical days of the Pacific War. Because, in addition, he has a lively imagination and inventive power, he has turned this raw material into stories that will be eagerly read for their dramatization of the greatest adventure of our generation." ; AS NEW. Folded Sheet. Zustand: Very Good. Single folded sheet (7 inches tall x 5-1/2 inches wide), printed on cream colored, watermarked paper, pp. (4), titled on front "The Classes of 1929 and 1930 / of / Swarthmore College / Under the Direction of / Bretta Capster Lucas / Present / Shakespeare's 'Twelfth Night; or, / What You Will' / Friday and Saturday Evenings, / May 31st and June 1st, 1929 / Collection Hall" with Mitchener headlining as Orsino, Duke of Illyria on p. (2). Program with light wear and finger soil, creasing and some pin holes near top edge from a previous mounting. Michener won the Pulitzer Prize in 1948 for his book "Tales of the South Pacific" and left most of his estate and book copyrights to Swarthmore College, where he earned his bachelor's degree. A very uncommon piece of Mitchener memorabilia and a pleasant literary association of the two writers. With no other original copies located, it's unlikey that another copy will be seen any time soon.
