Manuskript / Papierantiquität
Draft script for the 1967 British film comedy. Based on the 1963 novel by Patrick Ryan, about a small company of British infantry in North Africa during World War II. Director Richard Lester's first "serious" film, although still very much a black comedy, augmented by highly stylized cinematography, fourth wall breaking, and absurdist humor. One of the first antiwar films of the late 1960s, reflecting the souring public opinion of the Vietnam War. Set in Europe and North Africa, shot on location in Spain and Germany. Yellow wrappers with a die-cut title window in the British style. Title page present, undated, with credits for Lester, Ryan, and screenwriter Charles Wood, and an annotation in manuscript ink noting copy No. 10. 138 leaves, with last page of text numbered 136. Mimeograph duplication on eye-rest green stock, rectos only. Pages Near Fine, wrapper about Near Fine, bound internally with two silver brads, with a worn title label affixed to the binding.
