Zustand: Very Good. First Edition. Athens, GA: s.i., 1843. Small bifolium handbill (20cm) printed on front panel only, rear panel addressed to Howell Cobb, Esq. Previous mail folds, some uneven foxing, else a Very Good, fresh and sound example. Announcement that R. M'Helm of New York, "Professor of Penmanship and Book-Keeping, r…espectfully informs the inhabitants of Athens, that he has arrived from Augusta, at which place, he taught a large number of Ladies and Gentlemen, and has taken rooms at the Mitchells' Hotel, where he pledges himself to impart to all, in 12 to 18 lessons, his elegant system of mercantile and epistolary penmanship." M'Helm adds that his "systems have been formed from a practical experience of five years, in one of the first literary institutions at the North, and he has no hesitation in saying, that they are entirely different from any thing ever taught in this place." The text concludes with a list of references dated Athens, April, 17th, 1843. The rear panel is addressed in appropriately fancy script to then-congressman Howell Cobb (1815-1868), who later became one of the founders of the Confederacy. A rare piece of Athens job printing, local business history, and a sidelong glimpse at North vs. South simmering tensions.
