Cet anniversaire m'a rappelé celui que vous vouliez célébrer dans les Débats, avec ma collaboration. J'en suis navré, mais ayant été submergé…tous ces jours-ci, je n'ai pas eu un moment, même pour vous dire non. Maintenant que cette moutarde arriverait longtemps après dîner, je vous offre mes remords, qui sont encore cuisants. Joignons-y, comme fiche de consolation, la pensée que le jubilé de l'Ecole était un faux jubilé, inventé par la bienveillante traîtrise du ministère pour frapper les esprits du bloc et leur amener un plus grand nombre de décorations. Les chronologistes les plus expérimentés s'accordent à dire que l'Ecole a été fondée en mars 1873. On leur ferait de la peine en ne comptant depuis lors que 25 ans. Mais préparez tout de même une jolie tartine; vous la placerez dans vingt ans. Les Débats sont éternels. Si nous n'y sommes plus, ils y seront encore. Ici je vous embrasse avec autant d'effusion qu'il en a débordé, ces jours-ci dans les banquets ministériels»; [ On joint: ] 1 L.A.S. datée du 10 janvier 1910: [ ] Non, je n'ai pas l'intention de m'occuper de la littérature de Dufourcq, car j'en pense trop de mal et ce n'est pas le moment de le dire à ce brave garçon, que j'aime bien et qui traverse en ce moment un gros ennui professionnel. Quant à Mgr Mignot, oh! mon ami, ne me demandez pas de parler des lires d'évêques. Les évêque me font trop d'effet. Mille bonne amitiés». Ces deux lettres, remarquables de verve, furent adressées par le très fameux chanoine et historien catholique Louis Duchesne (1843-1922) à André Chaumeix, du Journal des Débats. Son uvre majeure, l'Histoire ancienne de l'Eglise, sera mise à l'index en 1912. Mgr Duchesne fut le Directeur de l'Ecole Française de Rome au Palais Farnèse, de 1895 à sa mort en 1922.
