Paperback. Zustand: Good. In this unforgettable and ?essential feminist memoir of women?s lives? (Sarah Wildman, author of Paper Love) the author of the New York Times bestselling memoir Perfection unearths her mother?s hidden past in in Nazi-occupied Austria. To Julie Metz, her mother, Eve, was the quintessential New Yorker. Eve rarely spoke about her childhood and it was difficult to imagine her living anywhere else except Manhattan, where she could be found attending Carnegie Hall and the Metropolitan Opera or inspecting a round of French triple crème at Zabar?s. After her mother passed, Julie discovered a keepsake book filled with farewell notes from friends and relatives addressed to a ten-year-old girl named Eva. This long-hidden memento was the first clue to the secret pain that Julie?s mother had carried as a refugee and immigrant from Nazi-occupied Vienna, shining a light on ?a story of political repression, terror, and dissolution.full of astonishing and unlikely twists of fate showing again that individual destiny may be the greatest mystery of all? (Dani Shapiro, author of Inheritance). ?A gripping and intimate wartime account with piercing contemporary relevance? (Kirkus Reviews), Eva and Eve lyrically traces one woman?s search for her mother?s lost childhood while revealing the resilience of our forebears and the sacrifices that ordinary people are called to make during history?s darkest hours.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. Texas history reaches far back in time by North American standards. It is fascinating by anyone's measure. Modern Texas is woven from the frayed but still firm-and always colorful-strands of its rich past. Few other states have so many varied regions with such distinct local flavors. Hardback. Zustand: Good. #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER An inspirational book about life and its lessons from the Golden Globe and Emmy nominated star of NBC's This Is Us. When This Is Us debuted in fall 2016, a divided America embraced a show that celebrates human connection. The critically acclaimed series became America's most watched--and most talked about--network show, even building on its fan base in the drama's second season. As Kate Pearson, Chrissy Metz presents a character that has never been seen on television, yet viewers see themselves in her, no matter what they look like or where they come from. Considered a role model just for being her authentic self, Chrissy found herself on magazine covers and talk shows, walking red carpets, and as the subject of endless conversations on social media "I don't know what you've been through to play her," she is often told by fans, "but it was something." In This is Me, Chrissy Metz shares her story with a raw honesty that will leave readers both surprised but also inspired. Infused with the same authenticity she brings to her starring role, Chrissy's This is Me is so much more than your standard Hollywood memoir or collection of personal essays. She embraces the spirit of Shonda Rhimes' Year of Yes, and shares how she has applied the lessons she learned from both setbacks and successes. A born entertainer, Chrissy finds light in even her darkest moments, and leaves the reader feeling they are spending time with a friend who gets it. Chrissy Metz grew up in a large family, one that always seemed to be moving, and growing. Her father disappeared one day, leaving her mother to work a series of menial jobs and his children to learn to live with the threat of hunger and the electricity being cut off. When her mother remarried, Chrissy hoped for "normal" but instead experienced a form of mental pain that seemed crafted just for her. The boys who showed her attention did so with strings attached as well, and Chrissy accepted it, because for her, love always came with conditions. When she set out for Los Angeles, it was the first time she had been away from her family and from Florida. And for years, she got barely an audition. So how does a woman with the deck stacked against her radiate such love, beauty and joy? This too is at the heart of This is Me.   With chapters that alternate from autobiographical to instructional, Chrissy offers practical applications of her hard-won insights in a series of "Bee Mindful" interstitials. There she invites you to embrace gratitude in "Say Thank You" or to be honest with your partner and yourself in "The Shrouded Supreme." Blending love and experience, Chrissy encourages us all to claim our rightful place in a world that may be trying to knock us down, find our own unique gifts, and pursue our dreams.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. The charming village of Fox Crossing, Maine (founded 1805) is the last bit of civilization before the 100-mile wilderness, the wildest and arguably most beautiful stretch of the Appalachian Trail. The little town has something else to offer as well. something rare, something that a few even call magic. It has The Fox. Crossing paths with a black cat is said to bring bad luck. But crossing paths with The Fox is a whole other story. Crossing paths with a black cat is said to bring bad luck. But crossing paths with The Fox is a whole other story . . . SOME SAY THE FOX IS GOOD LUCK In the mountain village of Fox Crossing, Maine, everyone knows the story of The Fox. According to local legend, one of the town's founders crossed paths with a curious-looking fox with a distinctive white ear and paw. The unusual fox sighting not only inspired the town's name, it sparked a fantastical piece of folklore that's been passed down for generations. Some people say that whoever sees The Fox will be rewarded with good fortune, love, and happiness. Others say it's just a silly folk tale . . . WHAT DOES THE FOX SAY? Annie Hatherley doesn't believe The Fox legend--even though it was her great-great-great-grandmother who spotted the critter centuries ago. But now it's part of Annie's legacy, along with her family business, Hatherley's Outfitters. For years, Annie's been selling gear to hikers on the Appalachian Trail. But she's never seen The Fox--until now. Out of nowhere, this little white-eared vixen leads her to Nick Ferrone, a woefully unprepared hiker who needs her help. The Shoo Fly Bakery owner also spots the sly creature--who takes him to a homeless dog that needs his love. Annie can't deny that something magical is happening--because she's starting to fall for a certain foxy hiker named Nick . . . Praise for Melinda Metz's Talk to the Paw "Filled with romance and adorable kitty antics . . . a light and cozy read that is awesome to curl up with, particularly alongside your own mischievous cat!" --Modern Cat "Surpassingly cute story of a matchmaking cat determined to pair off his human with a neighbor through the power of stinky laundry." --Kirkus Reviews. …

Paperback. Zustand: Fair. …

Hardback. Zustand: Good. On February 25, 1938, in the early days of the welfare system, the reviled poormaster Harry Barck--wielding power over who would receive public aid--died from a paper spike thrust into his heart. Barck was murdered, the prosecution would assert, by an unemployed mason named Joe Scutellaro. In denying Scutellaro money, Barck had suggested the man's wife prostitute herself on the streets rather than ask the city of Hoboken, New Jersey, for aid. The men scuffled. Scutellaro insisted that Barck fell on his spike; the police claimed he grabbed the spike and stabbed Barck. News of the poormaster's death brought national attention to the plight of ten million unemployed living in desperate circumstances. A team led by celebrated attorney Samuel Leibowitz of Scottsboro Boys fame worked to save Scutellaro from the electric chair, arguing that the jobless man's struggle with the poormaster was a symbol of larger social ills. The trial became an indictment of a system which expects a man to live, in this great democracy, under such shameful circumstances. We live in a time where the issues examined in>Killing the Poormaster--massive unemployment, endemic poverty, and the inadequacy of public assistance--remain vital. With its insight into our social contract, Killing the Poormaster reads like today's news.…
