In den WarenkorbTwelve typed letters, including eight letters, on letterheads from various universities, signed by Merton L. Dillon, between March 1, 1961 and February 26, 1968, written to Mrs. James Durgin of New York City; one letter to Mrs. Durgin from Edward T. James, signed and dated March 6, 1961; and three retained copies of Mrs. Durgin's letters to Dillon, one undated, the other two dated April 18, 1961 and Dec. 12, 1962. 8vo and 12mo; 14 pages (one page lacking lower portion, torn away, but no loss of text), approx. 2600 words. All the letters are in very good condition, a few a bit rumpled. Merton Dillon was charged with writing the short biography of Jane McManus Cazneau, for inclusion in the three volume publication NOTABLE AMERICAN WOMEN, 1607-1950. His first letter to Mrs. Durgin expresses excitement to learn that she is interested in Cazneau as well, and requests some help from her on general biographical points. His second letter to her, dated March 13, 1961, defends himself as having been selected to write the sketch since she appears to feel it should have been her. He tries to explain that his sketch will not interfere with her projected full-scale biography of Cazneau. His next letter is more relaxed, as he has apparently had a letter from Mrs. Durgin offering answers to some of his questions after all. The two correspondents go on to debate some points of information, including the first name of Cazneau's first husband [Allen or William Storm (?), a matter not resolved by the time Dillon's article was published]. The letter from Edward T. James to Mrs. Durgin explains how the publication, NOTABLE AMERICAN WOMEN, for which he was the editor, came to choose Dillon to write the essay. Though Dillon continues to encourage Mrs. Durgin to finish her biography, and though she herself says she is making progress and has three chapters completed, we can find no record of such a book. Jane McManus Cazneau was a journalist, publicist, and expansionist who accompanied her father and brother to Matagorda, Texas in 1833, with a company of German settlers. Her father had helped found the Galveston Bay and Texas Land Company. Her brother stayed on in Texas, but father and daughter returned to New York City. She continued to support the annexation of Texas, and lobbied in Washington for the annexation of Mexico. With her second husband William Cazneau she pushed for the U.S. government to consider annexations in the Caribbean, including Cuba and Santo Domingo. Both were supporters of Williams Walker's efforts in Nicaragua. Cazneau wrote several books under the pen name "Cora Montgomery," to forward her political agendas.
