In den WarenkorbEARLY EDITION / UNIFORM REISSUE. Merezhkovsky was a Russian Symbolist writer, critic, and religious philosopher. His religious and political views, shared with his wife, Zinaida Gippius, placed him at odds with both Church and state. He grew disillusioned with the outcomes of the 1905 Revolution, and by the time of the October Revolution he was fiercely opposed to Bolshevism, which he saw as spiritually destructive. In 1919, he fled Russia via Poland and never returned, spending the remainder of his life in Western Europe, chiefly in Paris, where he continued to write historical and religious works and became a prominent voice among the Russian émigré intelligentsia. First issued in English in 1901, The Death of the Gods is the opening volume of Christ and Antichrist, Dmitry Merezhkovsky's ambitious historical trilogy exploring the spiritual conflict between paganism and Christianity. Set in the fourth century, the novel centres on the Emperor Julian the Apostate, and enjoyed wide readership in translation in the early twentieth century. The book was followed by The Forerunner (sometimes called The Ressurection of Gods, about the life of Leonardo da Vinci) in 1902, and Peter and Alexis in 1905. The Forerunner was issued alongside with this volume in uniform style, but Peter and Alexis was seemingly not. Jacket design by Arthur Watts. Very uncommon thus. Blue cloth boards, dust jacket. BOOK: Boards square, spine faded, page edges toned; paper stock browned though contents are unmarked. DJ: Jacket with price 3/6 net to inner flap, some closed tears to tail of spine with dots of loss, nicked to extremities with a small triangle of loss to top of front cover. Very attractive overall; scarce Arthur Watts jacket?well-known illustrator and artist whose life was tragically cut short by a plane crash over the Swiss Alps in 1935.
