En 1932, Leo Strauss publicó una revisión crítica de esa obra, lo que dio comienzo a un intercambio muy sutil entre ambos en torno de la crítica schmittiana del liberalismo. Aunque Schmitt nunca le respondió públicamente, en la tercera edición de su libro modificó una serie de pasajes atendiendo a las críticas de Strauss. En esta obra, Heinrich Meier analiza aquello que el notable diálogo entre Schmitt y Strauss pone de manifiesto sobre las posiciones de estos dos pensadores seminales. Sostiene Meier que aquel intercambio sólo aparentemente gira en torno del liberalismo, ya que, en lo esencial, ese "diálogo oculto" explora el conflicto fundamental entre la teología política y la filosofía política, entre revelación y razón y, en última instancia, alude a la cuestión esencial de cómo los seres humanos deben vivir sus vidas.
