Soft cover. Zustand: New. Renowned for bringing the marvellous to the ordinary, Vinod Kumar Shukla has long been recognized as one of India's foremost writers, with a voice uniquely his own. The stories in Blue Is Like Blue deal with 'smaller-than-life people'. They live in rented accommodation, often in single rooms, where one electric bulb does for light. There's a nail to hang clothes from and a wall-to-wall string for the washing. When the clothes are dry, you place the carefully folded shirt under a pillow and lie down to sleep. Money is a concern, but the bazaar is the place to go and spend time in, especially if you have nothing to buy. The fear that you may be overcharged accompanies every transaction, but joy is not entirely absent. Few works of modern Indian literature come alive in English, and fewer still in the way that these stories do in Arvind Krishna Mehrotra and Sara Rai's brilliant translation.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. A UNIQUELY BEAUTIFUL COLLECTION OF POEMS BY ONE OF INDIA'S GREATEST WRITERS. As a poet, Vinod Kumar Shukla wishes to retain a meticulous record and also to create a body of knowledge. The subject of this activity is his, and other things', relationship to the universe, whichever bit of the universe preoccupies Shukla at that moment: a kitchen, a lane, a bus-stop, or a market. A persistent logic characterises the poetry, as well as a language that's mathematical-scientific in scope, never neglecting the benefits of using tautology ('The blurred tree was exactly like a tree') or reiterating the obvious ('Inside the prison is Nelson Mandela'). Throughout the work glimmers a liberating fact that lies outside the remit of mathematics: the universe and our place in it are unknowable. The poet arrives at no illumination; we do. One can hardly think of a record in literature that possesses a comparable uniqueness, or of a body of knowledge that's as indispensable.
Hardcover. Zustand: New. AN EXQUISITE COLLECTION OF POEMS BY ONE OF INDIA'S FOREMOST POETS. This new collection of poems by Arvind Krishna Mehrotra contains extraordinary records of the everyday, as well as a frequent reimagining of history that makes it as commonplace as a relative or a piece of furniture, and all the more strange and unrepeatable because of that. These involve Mehrotra inhabiting the voice and time of an ageing Ghalib; his revisiting Abdul-Rahim Khan-i-Khanan (15561627), a Baharlu Turk, an important figure in the Mughal nobility during the reigns of Akbar and Jehangir; and his discovery of objects and letters from his family home in Lahore. The result is a frayed immediacy that hefty historical novels find difficult to achieve.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. Indians have been writing prose and poetry in English for the past two centuries. Anthologies of the country's poets and poems have appeared regularly, but it is difficult to come across a wide-ranging historical anthology of the Indian essay in English. This collection starts with Derozio in the 1820s and ends with writers admired for their prose in the twenty-first century. This pioneering assemblage - of great Indian short prose within a single volume - is equally impressive for its range. The reflective essay, the luminous memoir, the essay disguised as a story, the memorable prefatory article, the newspaper column that transcends its humdrum origins, the gossip piece that oozes literariness, the forgotten flower in the long-dead magazine, the satirical putdown - all these find place here. A literary anthology also works as an alternative history. This volume resembles a map of middleclass India's social life and aesthetic sensibilities from hybrid perspectives - Indian and Western, feminine and masculine, anti-colonial and antinationalist. To be found in it are diverse characters in scattered locations - including Victorian Calcutta, modern America, village Egypt, elevated Oxford, feudal Kerala, cosmopolitan Mumbai, bureaucratic Delhi, Buddhist Benares, Civil Lines Allahabad, and small-town India. The essays amuse, surprise, edify. The feelings and ideas in them provoke thought, compassion, and a sense of the wonder that was India.

It is a revised, updated, text-only edition of An IIlustrated History of Indian Literature in English, which was published to wide acclaim in 2003. It starts by looking at the introduction of English into India's complex language scenario around the beginning of British rule. It then takes up the canonical poets, novelists, and dramatists, as well as many injustly forgotten figures, who have made significant contributions to the evolution of Indian literature in English. The book comprises twenty-four chapters, written by some of India's foremost scholars and critics. Each chapter is devoted either to single Author (e.g. Kipling, Tagore, Sri Aurobindo, R.K. Narayan), or to a group of authors (e.g. the Dutt family of nineteenth-century Calcutta; the Indian diasporic writers of the twentieth century), or to a genre (e.g. the beginnings of the Indian novel; poetry since Independence). Though the contributors are all experts in their chosen areas, they have written this book for the non-specialist general reader. Biographical information on major literary figures is provided, and in most cases their work is historically contextualized. The chapters can be read selectively (for example, to follow the development of a genre), or in the order in which they appear, which is chronological. For anyone interested in the story of English in India, or in the finest English storytellers of India, this is the essential book." (jacket).
