Bookplate Of James Fraser Gluck (1852-1897), Prominent Buffalo Area Attorney. He Was Influential In Establishing The School Of Philosophy At Cornell, Where He Was A Trustee. Through Mr. Gluck's Influence The System Of Scholarships Was Also Established Whereby Poor And Meritorious Students Received University Aid For Four Years To The Amount Of $250 A Year. At The Time Of His Death He Was President Of The Grosvenor Library And A Director Of The Buffalo Library. While Curator Of The Buffalo Library. Mr. Gluck Made A Collection Of Manuscripts, Autograph Letters Of Famous Men, Historical Documents Of Value And Rare Books; And Just Before The Close Of His Term Of Office He Surprised The Trustees Of The Library By Presenting To Them For The Institution What Many Deemed The Most Valuable Collection Of The Kind In The Country. His Private Library Was Probably The Largest Private Library In The City, And Distinctively Rich In History, Philosophy, Science And The Classics. Gluck Corresponded With Many Authors, Including Mark Twain, From Whom He Obtained The Original Manuscript Of "Huckleberry Finn", The Second Half Of Which Was Presumed Lost But Discovered 100 Years Later By One Of His Granddaughters In Their Attic.

McVickar, an American artist who was a prominent member of New York society during the Gilded Age.'Pastels in Prose', translated from French, is a charming collection of short, poetic prose pieces that aim to embody the essence of French symbolism.With contributions from various notable authors and poets, including Louis Bertrand, Theodore de Banville, Alphonse Daudet and Stephane Mallarme, among others.From the library of George Parker Bidder (1863-1953), a British marine biologist and President of the Marine Biological Association from 1939 to 1945. He primarily studied sponges, especially their hydraulics, as well as the movements of bottom feeders and coastal erosion.With Bidder's name inscribed to the front free endpaper, dated Christmas 1890. Another previous owner has also inscribed the famous way in which Bidder acquired the Parker's Hotel in Naples. According to the inscription, Bidder handed the hotel manager a cheque after he had been confronted about deep debt and therefore refused his breakfast.Also with the bookplate of Pamela and Raymond Lister to the front pastedown. Raymond was an English blacksmith, author and artist who was a leading authority on Samuel Palmer. In the publisher's original decorative cloth binding.
