Zustand: FINE. First thus. A reproduction of the 1856 edition of this classic fugitive slave story, with a new extensive introductory essay on Jews in the antislavery movement (this essay and the list of sources comprise 103 pp). Peter Still was kidnapped from his home in New Jersey as a child, was a slave for more than 40 years in Kentucky and Alabama and was finally liberated due to the generosity of two Jewish merchants who purchased him and them permitted him to buy his freedom with the work he did. After he obtained his own freedom, Still did not rest until he was able to purchase his wife and children also. Included in this book is the story of Seth Concklin, a white abolitionist who aided Still's family and was captured by slave hunters and either killed or committed suicide. Fine in fine dust jacket.

In den Warenkorbkart. Zustand: Sehr gut. 80 Seiten, zahlr. Abb. Gutes Exemplar mit leichte Gebrauchsspuren, einzelnen Bleistiftanstreichungen. / Good copy with small signs of wear, single pencil markings. - A PEOPLE IN PRINT -- Jewish Journalism in America -- A Century of Jewish Journalism: The Jewish Exponent, 1887-1987 Maxwell Whiteman -- The Forward Years A Conversation with Moses Rischin -- A History of Jewish Journalism in America Kenneth Libo, Ph.D. -- Catalogue of the Exhibition / Introduction: Pieces of the past present patterns for por- traits of our own devising. Each day news- papers and magazines provide us a series of instant histories and biographies. The exhi- bition, A People in Print: Jewish Journalism in America, is a compilation of reports of Jewish life in America by the Jewish press and American life as reported in Jewish owned secular journals. -- Interpretations are predicated upon points of view. Maxwell Whiteman in his essay for this catalogue entitled "A Century of Jewish Journalism: The Jewish Exponent, 1887-1987," has rendered a chronology of Jewish journalism to the present day by presenting an appreciation of the record of a Philadelphia English language Jewish newspaper. Moses Rischin in his tran- scribed interview, has answered questions related to an important Yiddish language newspaper, the Forward, published at one time in several United States cities. Kenneth Libo has assumed a kaleidoscopic bal- ance in describing Jewish involvement in American journalism in the concluding article. -- It is hoped that this exhibition, a survey of particular details of everyday life as written by contemporary observers, and the fo- cused representations of the catalogue au- thors, will allow us to evaluate within an expanded personal framework the role of Jewish people in the development of American history. -- I would like to acknowledge with gratitude the generous support of the Samuel S. Fels -- Fund, Fidelity Bank, Hunt Manufacturing Co., Mellon Bank, The Mabel Pew Myrin Trust, Philadelphia Electric Company, Philadelphia National Bank, Rohm and Haas Company, Sun Company, Inc., and the sponsorship of the Jewish Exponent in cooperation with the Federation of Jewish Agencies of Greater Philadelphia in honor of the Jewish Exponent's 100th Anniversary in funding this exhibition. -- I am grateful to Mr. Whiteman whose the- matic draft provided the framework for the genesis of the exhibition, to Edwin Wolf II for continuous counsel and support of ev- ery kind through this project and to Clifford Brenner who first broached the idea of this cooperative enterprise. Phyllis Yusem, Ex- hibition Committee Chairman, and Lyn Ross, President of the National Museum of American Jewish History, provided invalu- able assistance to all concerned. Associate Director Sallie Gross and Public Infor- mation Assistant Diane Eacret were most assiduous and responsible in editing exhibi- tion materials including the catalogue, as was the Z Studio in the design and produc- tion of the exhibition. -- Finally, I would like to extend my appre- ciation to Kenneth Libo, curator of A People in Print: Jewish Journalism in America, whose scholarship, resourcefulness and in- telligence allow the information of this ex- hibition to be disseminated broadly and publicly as it has always been meant to be.
