Cloth. Zustand: Fine. Zustand des Schutzumschlags: Near Fine. None (illustrator). First edition. A signed first edition of this insight into director, Max Stafford-Clark's working methods, with two loosely inserted letters. The first edition, first impression of the work. Presentation copy, signed by the author to the half title. Inscription reads: 'To Rod, With best wishes and great admiration, Max. (P.S. Thanks for 'My Mother Said.' The credit is entirely yours.)' The recipient was Rod Hall, a noted literary agent. With two loosely inserted letters, one from Rod Hall to Max Stafford-Clark regarding both the aforementioned 'My Mother Said' and including an endorsement from Rod to Max regarding a play entitled 'No Remission' by playwright Rod Williams. The second letter, unrelated to the work itself, is from Laura Cecil, literary agent of children's books, sent to Rod Hall, regarding the possible adaptation of a novel by Jonathan Gathorne-Hardy to television. Both included letters demonstrate Hall's deep involvement and influence in both literary and dramatic circles. Letters to George is a fascinating insight into the rehearsal methods of Stafford-Clark, told through the medium of letters Max sent to eighteenth century playwright George Farquhar during his restaging of his play, The Recruiting Officer'. In the original cloth binding in the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally in excellent condition with slight bumping to the head and tail of the spine. Dust wrapper is very smart with slight shelf wear to the extremities and the odd handling mark. Internally firmly bound. Pages bright and clean. Fine. signed by author. book.

Leather. Zustand: Good. Arthur B Frost (illustrator). First edition. A first edition of the humorous novel from the American Charles Heber Clark, written under the pseudonym Max Adeler. Clark was born in 1841 in Berlin, Maryland, to an abolitionist clergyman who was quickly unwelcome in the Southern States. In the civil war Clark enlisted in the Union army and served for two years until the conclusion of the conflict. He then became a journalist and then editor, becoming independently wealthy through investments. He wrote all of his humorous books under a pseudonym, and in fact disliked that his fame was based upon them. He also had a dispute with mark Twain, whom he accused of plagiarising his 1880 novelette 'Fortunate Island'. This copy contains a contemporary hand drawn sketch to the front blank. The edition is illustrated by Arthur B. Frost. In half morocco with marbled boards. Externally smart with light shelf wear. Internally, with a contemporary sketch in pencil to a front blank. With a contemporary signature in pencil to the title page. A little foxed, particularly to the first and last few pages as usual. Firmly bound. Good. book.

Hardcover. Zustand: Wie neu. Neuwertig. Originalverschweißt. Sprache - Deutsch.
