Original publisher's letterpress proofs, with authorial corrections and revisions (including substantial insertions and deletions) throughout, with leaves and slips of typescript (many with additional manuscript additions) inserted, bound up with preliminary drawings for the layout of the title leaf and ornaments. Full deep red brown crushed levant by La Haye, with geometric inlays in red and medium brown morocco extending across boards, with doublures with matching red morocco inlays, t.e.g., others untrimmed. One joint a bit rubbed, some spotting along top edge of upper board, with small ink drop on spine, internally very good consistent with nature of material. Maurois's set of corrected galley proofs for this work, the preliminaries mock-ups still reflecting the working title, NICIAS TROIS DIALOGUES SUR LE COMMANDMENT. While the proofs show the usual corrections of mechanicals and the like, Maurois also chose to substantially edit and rework the text in a number of places by way of pasteovers and inserts (including in one instance three full quarto leaves of typescript, and several other instances of almost full leaves of single-spaced typescript). He made substantial deletions of a number of long passages and the original text remains completely accessible. An inserted preliminary bears Maurois's caption title for his work in his hand (including two additional alternate titles), and his presentation inscription: "Pour Jean Lévy-Strauss, ami du livre et de l'auteur, en affecteux souvenir". - Talvart & Place notes the preparation of fifteen copies of the text prior to correction for circulation hors commerce; the corrected text for which these proofs and leaves of manuscript/typescript evidently served as basis was published in the distinguished Les Cahiers Verts series.

A postcard addressed to the wife of publisher Maurice Delamain by Simone André-Maurois, wife of French writer André Maurois, expressing her regret over having missed a social occasion due to her husband's obligations: "Nous avons été désolés ne pas pouvoir assister à la réception que vous avez donnée". André Maurois adds two lines under the text and signs. - A letter to a friend in which de Caillavet reports the latest news about the Proust family, namely Marcel Proust's niece Suzy Mante-Proust and her husband Gérard Mante. She mentions that Suzy Mante-Proust has returned safely from Mégère (where her eldest daughter, Dominique de Puységur, was due to give birth), and that she was called to Paris by the sudden death of her grandmother, who was buried the day after: "Suzy Mante-Proust est rentrée bien de Mégère (où sa fille aînée, Dominique de Puységur, doit accoucher cas jours-ci), rappelée à Paris par la mort subite de sa grand-mêre, que l'on enterre demain.". - The French writer Simone André-Maurois, born de Caillavet, was the second wife of the writer André Maurois. She was the daughter of the playwright Gaston Arman de Caillavet and granddaughter of Anatole France's mistress Léontine Arman de Caillavet; her family and that of Marcel Proust were connected through friendship. - Ink stains on the back of the letter. Adhesive residue on the front of the postcard.

Maurois quotes a French translation of Benjamin Disraeli's famous saying: "Life is too short to be little" that features in his 1927 biography "La Vie de Disreali". The appealing portrait by the important photographer Henri Manuel can be dated to the 1920s. - Some browning. The photgraph with a tear to the upper left corner.

Both to the publisher Maurice Delamain, concerning their friendship and the Société de Graphologie directed by Delamain. In the letter from 1935, Maurois thanks Delamain and his wife for a message concerning an unspecified ceremony, possibly a wedding anniversary: "Votre lettre nous suit ici et nous fait tous eux un très grand plaisir. Non qu'elle ajoute quoi que ce soit à l'affection et à l'amitié que nous avons pour votre couple. Pour nous le bien qui vous unit est fait d'éléments plus solides que la formalité d'une cérémonie ; il est fait de votre merveilleuse intelligence de sentiments, du tendre dévouement à votre femme, de tant de souffrances communes que vous avez [.] acceptées l'un pour l'autre [.]". - In the letter dated 12 December, Maurois accepts Delamain's invitation to become honorary president of the Société de Graphologie: "J'accepte d'être président d'honneur de la Société de Graphologie parce que c'est vous qui me le demandez, et parce que j'ai, comme vous le rappelez, toujours été intéressé par la graphologie. Naturellement mon travail ne me permet pas de prendre part à ses travaux. J'aurai donc l'honneur sans l'obligation de présence. Together 2½ pp. The dated letter was undoubtedly addressed to Jean Cocteau, as it concerns events following his election to the Académie française on 3 March 1955 that had been sponsored by Maurois. After apologizing for having missed the "handover of the sword" and being unable to attend an upcoming "commission reading", Maurois promises to fulfil his duties as Cocteau's "godfather" on the 27th and attend the unspecified event "adorned with decorations": "Je n'ai pas de chance ! Le jour de remise de l'épée j'étais à Londres ; le jour de la lecture en commission je serai à Genève. Mais le 27, le parrain sera fidèle au poste, et chamarré comme il convient [.]". Cocteau's official reception by Maurois would follow on 20 October 1955. - The undated letter is to thank an Italian friend named Roberto for a book, also mentioning a grave illness of his mother-in-law Jeanne de Caillavet (1874-1961): "Vous avez montré (comme toujours) autant de générosité que de talent. Merci de tout cur. Pour moi ce livre aura été un utile exercice. Comprendre est toujours une joie. Comprendre des choses qui pour moi, et pour beaucoup de lecteurs, sont neuves n'a enchanté. Nous avons de tristes Pâques, la mère de Simone ayant eu une crise cardiaque. Cela va mieux mais l'alerte fut sérieuse.
