Maurice Polydore Marie Bernard Maeterlinck (1862-1949) was a Belgian playwright, poet, and essayist who was Flemish but wrote in French. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1911. One of his best known works is L'Oiseau bleu (The Blue Bird), first performed on the 30th September 1908. The Betrothal is a Fairy Play in five acts,sequel to The Blue Bird. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine and blind stamped titling on the front board. The case of the book is in very good condition with light shelf wear on the boards and slight darkening with a little spotting on the spine. The spine ends are lightly bumped. The contents are tight and clean with some browning to the endpapers. There is no inscription.

French naturalist and entomologist Jean-Henri Fabre was known for the lively, engaging and poetic way he wrote about the lives of insects. Fabre's method of infusing insect life with humanity and humor still influences contemporary natural history writing.

Very subtle rubbing to corners and spine ends, good hinges, firm text block, far lower corners of a few plates creased, pages very clean with a small transparent stain to the upper margins of pages 67-72, no names or other markings. The program is also very good and folds out to show the seating plan for the 1910-1911 season. First Edition Thus. Hard Cover. Very Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall.
