Collated, complete.In this work, Susan St Maur, Duchess of Somerset, provides an account of a journey made over several months across Canada in the company of her husband, the Duke of Somerset.She provides a vivid description of Canadian life and culture in the late nineteenth century. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally, very smart, with bumping to back strip head and tail, and a touch of cockling to the tail of the front board. Original pale brown buckram board with gilt impression a figure on horseback holding a hunting rifle. Gilt title lettering to front and spine. Original black endpapers. Ends of spine slightly rolled. A near fine copy. A enthusiastic account of a journey across Canada in the company of her husband, Algernon St. Maur, 15th Duke of Somerset. Most of the journey was undertaken by train, with numerous pauses en route, and there are vivid descriptions of Canadian life and culture of that time. Noted as a generous philanthopist and supporter of many charitable causes she was much decorated in her lifetime: Dame Grand Cross of the Order of the Hospital of St John of Jerusalem, Medal of the Queen Victoria and Queen Alexandra Nurses Institution, the Belgian Queen Elisabeth Medal, the French Médaille de la Reconnaissance, the Italian Medaglia Benemeriti Croce Rossa, the Serbian Red Cross Order, and the Spanish Red Cross Merit Order.
