The chief function of the lung, for example, is to provide the cells of the body with oxygen and to remove their carbon dioxide waste. In man this is accomplished by making use of two systems: one supplying air, the other blood. With the aid of haemoglobin, the circulating blood carries to and from the tissue cells large amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide. The lungs supply the air and, acting as a gas exchanger, load the blood stream with oxygen and eliminate the carbon dioxide. In this book Dr Matthews describes the various chemical exchanges in man and develops his theme along principles common to these exchanges wherever they take place in the human body. Beyond this description of what and where, he attempts to answer the question how-thus we learn about the mechanisms involved. This highlights some of the uncertainties typical of much general physiological research. The final question is why chemical exchanges are'necessary.
