Octavo, pages 335-449 plus a chromolithograph ('Figure of Daibaitah', from Grey's 'Journals of Two Expeditions of Discovery in North-West and Western Australia', 1841), and a folding colour map ('Ethnological Map based mainly on Philological Evidence', 258 × 346 mm). Original blind-decorated cloth (with the ticket of the binder Corbett on the front pastedown) lettered in gilt on the spine; cloth a little flecked (mainly on the spine); a few small light stains to the top edge; other edges and the first few leaves a little foxed, with occasional light scattered foxing elsewhere; tiny tear to the map near the stub; overall, an excellent copy. An Australia-wide survey, in which the author pulls no punches. He expresses special indebtedness to the work of E.M. Curr, 'although some of [the latter's] conclusions have been widely different from those enunciated in this essay'. This volume also contains STEPHENS, Edward: The Aborigines of Australia, being Personal Recollections of those Tribes which once inhabited the Adelaide Plains of South Australia (27 pages); and WYNDHAM, W.T.: The Aborigines of Australia (7 pages). The other 17 articles are on a variety of subjects of interest, ranging from 'Flying Machine Memoranda' by Lawrence Hargreaves (5 pages plus 8 illustrations, all but two of them full-page), to 'Irrigation in its Relation to the Pastoral Industry of New South Wales' by H.G. M'Kinney (with large folding maps).
