In den WarenkorbFIRST EDITION, pp. [15], 108, 8vo, original pink marbled boards, backstrip lettered in black, knock to top corner of upper board and light wear at extremities, top edge a little dusty, other edges untrimmed and slightly toned, faint partial browning and a few faint spots to free endpapers, front pastedown with the bookplate of C.E. Bechhofer Roberts (see below), dustjacket darkened to backstrip and borders, chipped at ends of backstrip panel, this reinforced internally with brown paper at ends, very good. Inscribed by E. Powys Mathers on the flyleaf: '"To the saints which are at Ephesus", from Powys Mathers, 27.5.36'. The recipient, C.E. Bechhofer Roberts, was an author, the majority of whose fiction titles were published under the pseudonym 'Ephesian'. A typed letter to the same (as 'Dear Ephesian') is laid in, this from Mathers' wife, Rosamond, who passes on information from her husband (referred to by his nickname, 'Bill') regarding literature on the theme of the Black Mass; a lengthy manuscript note on the same subject, including lengthy quotations from Boguet and Montague ('Monty') Summers is signed 'A' - identity obscure. Bechhofer Roberts, who had met Rasputin and Gurdjieff during the Great War, wrote, largely from a sceptical position, on themes of the spiritual and supernatural. Mathers' well-regarded translations of the Arabic folk-tales were based on the French renderings of J.C. Mardrus; they would constitute the greater part of his literary legacy, were it not for the cryptic crosswords he compiled under the name 'Torquemada' - which he extended to a fiendishly difficult piece of detective fiction in the form of a puzzle - 'Cain's Jawbone'. He had earlier been educated at Trinity College, Oxford.
