Ink name on ffep of Lieutenant Colonel Richard Chester-Master (1870-1917), who served through the South African War, being present at the actions of Belmont, Graspan, Modder River, Magersfontein, Paardeberg, Driefontein, and Sanna's Post. He was twice mentioned in Despatches and received the Queen's Medal with six clasps and the King's Medal with two clasps, as well as the brevet of Major. He acted as A.D.C. to Lord Milner when he was High Commissioner of South Africa and held the positions of Commandant-General of the British South African Police, Rhodesia, from 1901 to 1905, and Resident Commissioner and Commandant-General in Southern Rhodesia from 1905 to 1908.…

Zustand: Very good. New York, August 31, 1901 and November 9, 1901., 1901. Very good. - Two letters addressed to the American lecture manager James B. Pond. The first, a 4 page autograph letter consisting of over 120 words penned on 4 sides of 6-7/8 inch high by 4-3/8 inch wide paper with the text framed by heavy black mourning rules. In his letter dated August 31,1901, the president of the Lotos Club Frank Richard Lawrence replies to a letter from the the American lecture manager James B. Pond informing him of his wife's death, "Our own troubles here culminated after eighteen months of the most terrible strain and anxiety in the death of my dear wife on the 11th instant, and I think we shall all go abroad next week for a few week's change of scene." He suggests that all matters pertaining to the Lotos Club should be handled by the Club's Vice President for a while. He'd like to call Pond the following week and invite Pond to dine with him before he leaves. He closes saying "We have had a crushing affliction as you will understand." Signed "Frank R. Lawrence". Folded for mailing with Pond's light red stamp indicating he's answered. Else, near fine. The second is a typed letter signed consisting of over 70 words typed on his 5-1/8 inch high by 8 inch wide personal stationery. Having returned from abroad, Frank R. Lawrence writes to Pond on November 9, 1901, that he is glad to have Pond's "kind note of welcome", he explains "I am glad to say that I am in tolerable health, have just returned as you know, and expect to take things a little gradually." Signed "Frank R. Lawrence". Folded for mailing with a tiny tear to the bottom edge. Both letters are in very good condition. The corporate lawyer and after-dinner speaker Frank Richard Lawrence (1845-1918) served as President of the Lotos Club for 29 terms and presided over nearly all of the noted dinners at the Club where national & international figures were honored. He was active in masonry and served as the Grand Master of the State of New York, during which time New York's Masonic Temple was erected. He married Eva Annette Reed in 1874. A member of the New York Yacht Club, Lawrence was a yachting enthusiast and owned several steam and sail yachts, and once served as Commodore of the American Yacht Club.…

Ten learned works are listed, beginning with the ill-fated 'Suidae Lexicon, Graece & Latine' ('3 Vol. Folio, 1710'). The earliest dates from 1706 and the latest from 1716. According to the Victoria County History, it was under Richard Bentley that 'Crownfield ('a Dutchman . . . and a very ingenious man') was appointed Inspector of the Press and a body of Curators (afterwards called the Syndics of the Press), consisting of the heads of colleges, the professors, and other masters of arts, was appointed to control the Press on behalf of the University. Elaborate rules were made for the conduct of business, and year by year Crownfield presented to the Curators a statement of work, of expenses incurred, and of cash received.' The three items are in good condition, ondff lightly aged and worn. Three interesting items, responding tactfully to what would appear to be an accusatory communication by Harington, pointing out that his son has succeeded despite having been 'superannuated' from Westminster School. ONE: 18 October 1898. 4pp., 12mo. Begins: 'Dear Sir Richard Harington | I am delighted to read the two enclosures. The Winnington-Ingrams one associated with many memories of my Rugby, Marlborough, & later days!' He will send the enclosures to the Head Master, [b]ut I won't rebuke him or convey any rebuke. I know by my personal experience, that School Masters are far from infallible & that many boys who do not make way in public-schools turn out right well as men.' As 'an aged man' himself, Bradley ventures 'a hint', suggesting that Harrington sends 'a kindly line to Rutherford from yourself calling his attention to the useful & fruitful life which your son is leading better this than any rebuke.' He concludes by apologising, as he is 'fresh from & returning to the deathbed of my old neighbour Sir Rutherford Alcock'. TWO: 18 October 1898. 2pp., 12mo. Reads: 'Dear Sir Richard | It is such a very busy time that I lost none in shewing these to the Head Master He has just returned them & is, you may feel confident, as pleased as I that the once "superannuated" boy had proved so good & useful a man.' THREE: 25 October 1897. 3pp., 12mo. He begins by repeating his 'hearty satisfaction' at Harington's son's 'more than success in his sacred calling'. For his own part, he 'cannot blame the Head Master for carrying out "superannuation" rules'. He will 'lose no time in telling him the good news of an O.W who once came under them'. The school 'is doing well', and Bradley 'had a most pleasing account two days ago from an old pupil of my own, now a distinguished public servant, who lately removed his son from Marlborough & sent him here'. Harington's heir, the future Sir Richard Harington (1861-1931), 12th Baronet, had a successful career on the Oxford Circuit, was appointed a Puisne Judge in the High Court of Justice at Fort William in Bengal in 1899, and served in that capacity until returning to England in 1913. Austen-Leigh's three letters are all signed 'R A Austen Leigh'. ONE: ALS to Vellacott. 3 May 1942; 'as from | D2 Albany | Piccadilly W.1'. 2pp., 12mo. He asks if Vellacott can 'enlighten me on the following point - I am editing some letters of Dr. Goodall, who was Provost of Eton 1809 to 1840. There follows a sixteen-line transcript of a letter written in May 1838 from Goodall to his brother, regarding which he writes: 'Who would Mr. V - have been, if one presumes that Goodall gave his real initial?' (Vellacott has pencilled in the reply 'Thomas Veasey Fellow'.) A paragraph regarding Lawrence Impey and the Beefsteak Club follows, and there is the following postscript: 'I had, in writing the above, overlooked the fact that another Mr. V - did become Master a hundred years later!' TWO: TLS to Vellacott. On letterhead of 1 New-street Square, London, EC4; 10 June 1942. 1p., 12mo. Written in response to a letter from Vellacott of 8 June 1842, a carbon copy of which (1p., 4to) is present, in which Vellacott asks for information concerning any surviving portrait of the Master of Peterhouse from 1699 to 1733, Thomas Richardson, who may be 'the first Master to live in this Lodge. This Lodge only came into our possession about six years before his death and he may not have moved from the rooms in College then occupied by the Master.' Austen-Leigh replies that he does not know of any portrait of Richardson, but that he will 'write to the Vice-Provost [Marten] and also to Wasey Sterry'. In the second paragraph he gives a little biographical information regarding Richardson, and ends with comments on the longevity of the Masters of Peterhouse, Impey, and the new Headmaster of Harrow, adding waspishly: 'not that I ever heard of him. I assume it was not too easy to find the right man.' THREE: TLS to Marten. Place and date as Two. 1p., 12mo. He asks whether it is possible that there is a portrait of Richardson in the Cloisters. Marten's ALS ('C. H. K. M.') in reply is on the reverse, dated from Eton on 11 August 1942. Apologising for his 'scandalously late answer' he writes that he 'can find no trace' of any portrait. At the foot of the page is a note from Austen-Leigh [to Vellacott, to whom he is forwarding the letter]: 'This is not a particularly belated reply for the V. P.! | Sorry it is a blank | RAAL | 13.8.42'.…

He regrets that Ellaby is asking him 'for more information than it is in my power to give you'. Even if he were 'in possession of the views of the Government' he 'could not disclose them' to Ellaby, who must form his own opinion 'from the public utterances of the Prime Minister and Mr. Balfour'. Having said this, Ellaby 'may take it that a strenuous resistance to Home Rule will be a main feature of the Unionist Programme at the next Election'. Salisbury's Conservatives won the 1892 general election without an overall majority. Salisbury's nephew Balfour led the party in the Commons.…

He regrets that his letter should contain 'so truly painful an account of the state of your family & affairs in the West Indies', but was 'glad to receive it, since after my last communication I was at a loss, not seeing you in Oxford, to explain your silence - I hope at some future occasion, I shall see you again under my roof'. Regarding William Tierney Elton (d.1874) he writes that on referring to his 'list' he sees that 'Mr: Elton's name is entered for admission in some part of the year 1825', and it gives him 'real pleasure to hear so favourable a report of him, & I trust he will do credit to his Tutor & College'. He is sorry that he has 'no means of forwarding the views of your Nephew at Westminster', only having 'little acquaintance' with the Dean of Christ Church', who has 'many & strong applications' to deal with. He concludes with a reference to '[t]he admirable & invaluable member of our Society for whom you gave your last vote as Fellow of Balliol (), has within the short space of seven years, the option of vacant by the melancholy death of poor Rogers'. He concludes in the hope of seeing Marshall again 'within the walls of old Balliol'.…

Five items, in good condition, lightly aged and worn. Webster's four letters total 6pp., 12mo. The first letter (13 April) follows on from one of Harington's, forwarded to Webster by 'Digby', regarding the possibility of inserting in a parliamentary bill 'a provision that the State shall pay the costs of assigning Counsel for the defence of all prisoners [] The experience of the last 10 years under the Criminal Law Amendment Act of 1885 and of other Acts for a much longer period does not support the view that prisoners are in any greater danger if they are allowed to give evidence than if they were not'. In the second letter (22 April) he discusses his aims, and seeks to reassure him that 'it is not the least my intention to accept the views of those whom you call "the big wigs" only. I very much desire to have the opinions of all those who have practical experience. If the House should think fit to insert any limitation in the Bill I should not object but I am bound to say that the overwhelming mass of testimony which I receive points in the other direction. I do not think it would be possible to exclude Quarter Sessions but I am now considering whether it is desirable to limit the Bill to the trial of indictable offences'. The third letter (24 April) invites Harington to call, and fourth (28 April) proposes arrangements for the meeting. Also present is an Autograph Draft of a letter to Webster, initialed and dated from Whitbourne Court, Worcester, 14 April 1897. 2pp., 12mo. With deletions and emendations.
