Mary Barnes était infirmière, lorsqu'à 42 ans elle commença à éprouver les premiers symptômes de ce qu'on appelle communément la «schizophrénie». Elle entra alors à Kingsley Hall, l'unité expérimentale créée par les antipsychiatres anglais sous la direction de Ronald Laing, où on sut la laisser régresser jusqu'à des stades très primitifs de la vie affective. Elle put ainsi, à travers cette mort symbolique, renaître à elle-même, délivrée cette fois du n ud de conflits relationnels qui l'avait jusqu'alors emprisonnée. La peinture fut pour elle l'occasion de se libérer de son angoisse et d'exprimer ce qu'elle ne pouvait encore formuler verbalement. Depuis, Mary Barnes est « guérie » et son cas représente la réussite la plus exemplaire des méthodes préconisées par l'anti-psychiatrie, opposée aux techniques médicales chimiques de la psychiatrie traditionnelle. Le livre, écrit alternativement par Mary Barnes et Joseph Berke (le psychiatre qui l'accompagna tout au long de ce « voyage » de cinq années), est un document unique sur l'un des mouvements de pensée les plus controversés à l'heure actuelle.
