Matthias Martini (Martinius) (1572-1630), a German Calvinist divine, educator, and philologist, was educated at Herborn Academy under Johannes Piscator and returned there to teach early in his career, at the time this book was published. Later he became the rector of the college of Bremen and did much to improve that institution. His fame as a scholar is built principally upon his LEXICON PHILOLOGICUM of the Latin language, first published in 1623, that went through many editions. (Platts.
