To forge the connection between two such disparate texts I take recourse to Arjun Appadurai's book Modernity at Large: Cultural Dimensions of Globalization (1996) that in important respects touches both on literature as cultural practice and on the global moment in which Debord's society of integrated spectacle is situated. Debord's notion of the society of integrated spectacle defines the specificity of the global moment of modernity where 'the interlinked diasporas of people and images' (Appadurai 1996) play increasingly decisive role. The postcolonial literature that is intricately connected to multiple landscapes of flow explores their effect upon 'the work of the imagination' (Appadurai 1996) as collective social fact. Equally constitutive of the '[d]iasporic public spheres, diverse among themselves' (Appadurai 1996), these flow-scapes produce in the global culture of the society of the spectacle multiple arenas 'for conscious choice, justification, and representation' (Appadurai 1996).

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2006 in the subject Sociology - Culture, Technology, Peoples / Nations, grade: Pass, The University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, course: Comprehensive Doctoral Examination, language: English, abstract: The article provides tentative bridges between the condition of museums as cultural institutions undergoing transformation of their place within the urban space and the late capitalism as a globe-spanning process. The postmodern spatial relations single out museum as the site where the cultural logic of late capitalism receives its concrete expression within both the economic structures and aesthetic forms involved in it. The relation of the museum as a space where the boundaries of the aesthetic experience and expression are tested to the capitalism is not that of modeling the experience corresponding to the next stage of capitalism through its negation and revolt against it, as Krauss claims (Krauss 1990), but that of co-constitution. The late capitalist logic of production of difference as the index of economic value and the object of further investment attains its purest expression in postmodern status of the work of art whose sign-value is pure difference.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Research Paper (undergraduate) from the year 2006 in the subject Sociology - Media, Art, Music, grade: Pass, The University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, course: Comprehensive Doctoral Examination, language: English, abstract: In accord with the stance of John Urry (2000) and Zygmunt Bauman (2000) on the global civil society as increasingly coming into effective legal and political existence, I propose to read John Urry's Sociology beyond Societies: Mobilities for the Twenty-first Century (2000) as a springboard to application of its methodological and theoretical aspects to the international art exhibition Documenta 11. The consideration of Documenta in the context of globalization allows me to trace its impact both on the institutional form that Documenta has taken and on the range of issues that its components cover in relation to the global civil society. The five Platforms of Documenta 11 give important insight into the constitution of global civil society as a public sphere taking place beyond the nation-states. In this regard John Urry's book Sociology beyond Societies: Mobilities for the Twenty-first century (2000) gives a number of methodological starting points from which to begin to chart the contours of the global civil society in the constitution of which such global mega-events as Documenta art exhibition participate.

As a social class and as a space of positions within the general social structure their very emergence have become possible through the creation of the market for cultural goods from one side, and through the general rise in the level of the European economic activity that gradually has had its influence on the general standard of living. According to a series of researchers the coffee-houses are heterogeneous sites because of the various uses of this type of social space, on one side of spectrum of such activities are gambling and prostitution, while on the other newspapers reading and political pamphlets, as well as because of structural functionality of their position within the realization of the dynamics of modernity as an epoch spanning the period from the late Renaissance to the twentieth century (Hetherington 1997: 14; Ellis 1956; Billington 1980; Stallybrass and White 1986). The essence of the umbilical relationship of the bourgeoisie as a social class and of the identitarian politics of its self-constitution against the site of the social space that presents itself both as other and as the identical to the ethos of the middle class is revealed in the role the coffee-house played in the seventeenth and eighteenth century with regard to the stabilization of the ways the bourgeois social relations work.

Ukraine has joined these newly independent states with little reliance on the institutions of the civil society. The developments within the Ukrainian art reflect the implications that the failure of the civil society institutionalization has for this particular domain of Ukrainian society. Ukrainian contemporary art that is presented at the major international art museums and art festivals of the contemporary art is a post-Soviet phenomenon that occupies the junction between Ukrainian art, international institutions and civil society. As a field of artistic activity Ukrainian contemporary art strives to differentiate itself from Ukrainian art that originated in the environment largely formed in the pre-independence, Soviet period. The struggles for authority within the field of Ukrainian contemporary art have involved Ukrainian institutions that are outside of it. Both institutional and personal agency within the field of Ukrainian contemporary art is affected by the lack of institutionalized civil society in Ukraine. In the theoretical terms of Pierre Bourdieu it is the case of the lack of autonomy that the field of Ukrainian contemporary art has. The sought-for autonomy would allow the field of Ukrainian contemporary art to exercise control over the resources of artistic authority. How this finds its articulation in the personal narratives of the major Ukrainian contemporary art figures and in the conflicts that happen in the field of Ukrainian contemporary art is the topic of this re.

Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2008 in the subject Sociology - Habitation, Urban Sociology, grade: Pass, The University of Alberta, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, course: Doctoral Final Oral Examination, language: English, abstract: As urban centers concentrate organizational, service, and communication infrastructures, amplifying both the influence of networks and the importance of global flows, the urban policy and theorization emphasis has to shift towards the performative, contingent and material aspects of cities. The theoretical effort of Münch reinforces the explanatory power of both theoretical research and practical problem solving by laying the foundations of a theory of modernity, systems of accumulation, and action. Münch's sociology allows for the analytical and historical description of individual and collective action. Post-traditional connections among anthropology, philosophy, political economy, and history make possible interdisciplinary arenas of inquiry defined more by subject than by discipline guiding the process of clarification of links among multiple sites where researcher can pursue his or her subject matter using the methodology of multi-sited anthropology. Münch's theorization of interpenetration, systems, and action allows for the reconstruction of the relations between economy and culture as analytical ideal types that allow for variation and change. Münch's development of Parsons', Weber's and Durkheim's sociology theorizes modern development in terms that connect systems of economic, cultural, social and political accumulation into a dynamic structure of related contradictions showing historical and geographical variations. In temporally, spatially, and socially specific ways, urban spaces actively contribute to the formation of economies, cultures, societies and polities. Cities serve as sites of strategic centrality, interrelated diversity, and mobile interconnection for individual and collective actors entering into spatially, historically, and relationally specific interrelations. Arising from the strategies of urban development, cultural clusters are variously shaped by the dynamics and contradictions of the interrelations among individual organizations, available strategies, and cultural objectives. Notably aligned with the transformations afoot in global cities, art museums and biennials manifest urban structures of modern social order. Thus, art exhibitions are complex and contingent instances of social, cultural, political, and economic accumulation.
