Holmes particpated in the Battle of Ball's Bluff, the Peninsual Campaign, Antietam, and 1st and 2nd Fredericksburg as well as his period as aide-de-camp to General Horation Wright. Th diary is principally concerned with the Wilderness Campaign, Spottsylvania, and the assault on Petersburg in May and June of 1864.
