Tegelijk onderzoekt hij hoe de traditie van de familie Brenninkmeijer om uitsluitend opvolgers uit eigen rijen te rekruteren, uitpakte voor de strategie van de onderneming.Afkomstig uit de Westfaalse ambulante handel begonnen de gebroeders Clemens en August Brenninkmeijer in 1841 een bedrijf in Nederland, dat zijn activiteiten in 1911 naar Duitsland en in 1922 naar Groot-Brittannië uitbreidde. Ondanks de moeilijkheden die de Brenninkmeijers als buitenlanders, kapitalisten en rooms-katholieken in het Derde Rijk ondervonden, benutten ze de zakelijke kansen die het regime ondernemingen bood, onder meer bij de arisering van vastgoed. Na 1945 maakte het bedrijf een stormachtige groei door in de beginnende consumptiemaatschappij en ontwikkelde het zich tot een van de grootste Europese modeketens.
