Maude's 'Birthday Benefit Matinée' took place for charity at the Haymarket Theatre, 24 April 1942. Hambourg performed three pieces: one by Chopin, one by Tchaikowsky, and one of his own compositions. A great success, the matinee also saw Maude's last performance, as Sir Peter Teazle opposite Vivien Leigh.

With his brothers, the cellist Boris Hambourg and violinist Jam Hambourg, Hambourg moved with his family from his birthplace in Russia to London in 1889 as refugees from the Tsarist regime.

Lightly and evenly age toned; small stamp hinge-type mounts at left edge and bottom edge (not affecting text). Hambourg boldly pens two measures of unidentified music, signing and dating below. An attractive and early example.

Small quarto, 89 x 122 mm. 2 measures, inscribed "To Mrs [?]Konody with best wishes," notated in black ink on a portion of an album leaf with additional signatures to verso. Very slightly browned and stained. A pianist and composer, the Russian-born Hambourg was a student of Leschetisky from 1891-1895, before his first international tour; he became a British citizen in 1896.
