Pictorial boards. Fine. Köln, Walther König, 2014. 8:o. 112 pp. Illustrated. In 1945 Marcel Duchamp published a photographic self-portrait in the American magazine View, which depicts him, according to the caption, "at the age of 85." In reality he was, at the time, only 58 years old. Thus far the circumstances of surrounding this incunable of the "staged photograph" were unknown. A recently discovered script by Friedrich Kiesler is published in this book for the first time, in which he describes in full detail how he assisted his friend Marcel Duchamp to style himself as a senile artist-philosopher in front of the camera of New York photographer Percy Rainford. The well-known Duchamp expert Herbert Molderings interprets Duchamp's self-portrait as an innovative, conceptual use of photography. The camera was used as a "time machine," but not, as customary, to capture a present moment, but rather to look into the future.

Förlagets guldpräglade klotband, dek. skyddsomslag. Gott skick. Stockholm, Rabén & Sjögren / Nationalmuseum (tr. Björkmans eftr.), 1986. 8:o. 192 sid. Illustrerad, bl. a. med några monterade färgplancher.

Publisher's boards. Very fine. Los Angeles, Getty Research Institute, 2016. 8vo. 404 pp. Illustrated with colour plates. Text bilingual in English and French. "Robert Lebel, a French art critic and collector, was instrumental in rendering Marcel Duchamp's often hermetic life, art, and ideas accessible to a wider public across Europe and the United States, principally with Sur Marcel Duchamp (1959), the first monograph and catalogue raisonné devoted to the artist. Duchamp was a willing partner in the book's creation. His active participation in both its conception and layout was so substantial that the book is considered part of the artist's oeuvre. But the project took six years to complete. The trials, tribulations, quarrels, and machinations that plagued the production, publication, and publicity of Sur Marcel Duchamp are the focus of this correspondence between two lifelong friends. Translated and printed in full together for the first time, these letters, postcards, and telegrams from the collection of the Getty Research Institute offer uncensored access to the evolution of the relationship between Lebel and Duchamp from December 1946 to April 1967. They provide valuable information about their daily activities as well as those of friends and colleagues, vital details concerning their various collective projects, not to mention illuminating insights into their thinking about art and life. These documents, witty and sincere, bear witness to the art of friendship and to a friendship in art. This is a bilingual edition, with all texts in English and French." - - - Contents: Foreword: "Thanks for the buggy-ride" / Jean-Jacques Lebel -- Marcel Duchamp and Robert Lebel: the art of friendship, a friendship in art / Paul B. Franklin -- The correspondence / Marcel Duchamp and Robert Lebel -- "Besides it is always the others who die": a chronology of Marcel Duchamp's life and work / Paul B. Franklin.

Publisher's boards, pictorial dustjacket. Fine. London, Thames & Hudson, 2000. 8vo. 408 pp. + 16 pp. of plates. With index. (Publisher:) "Duchamp left behind a large volume of correspondence: letters, postcards and telegrams that he wrote to relatives, friends, colleagues and professional acquaintances. Amazingly, these documents - an invaluable source of information in our attempts to understand the artist and his work - are little-known, and never before have they been collated and published in English. Noted art historian Francis M. Naumann has devoted over twenty years to assembling Duchamp's traceable letters, and he has translated and annotated them for a variety of publications. Here, in The Selected Correspondence of Marcel Duchamp, he and Hector Obalk have selected 285 of the artist's most important and informative documents, and arranged them chronologically. The letters were transcribed by Hector Obalk, annotated by Francis Naumann and translated where necessary from the original French by Jill Taylor. The book contains a selection of Duchamp's correspondence with Louise and Walter Arensberg, Constantin Brancusi, André Breton, Jean Crotti, Jacques Doucet, Katherine S. Dreier, Suzanne Duchamp, Arne Ekstrom, Yvonne Crotti-Lyon, Man Ray, Henry McBride, Walter Pach, Francis Picabia, John Quinn, Robert Lebel, Henri-Pierre Roché, Alice Rouillier, Alfred Stieglitz, Carrie, Ettie and Florine Stettheimer, Tristan Tzara, Jacques Villon, Beatrice Wood and many others. The Selected Correspondence of Marcel Duchamp is an essential volume for art historians and lovers of modern art, and will bring a special insight into the life and work of one of the most influential artists of the twentieth century".
