Lapie's 1831 map of the Iberia or Spain and Portugal. The map covers all of Spain and Portugal from France to the Mediterranean Sea and from the Atlantic to the Balearic Islands. During this period Portugal on the cusp of the War of the Two Brothers. In 1826, Peter IV of Portugal abdicated his thrown in favor of his seven year old daughter Maria da Gloria, on the condition that she marry her uncle (Peter's brother) Miguel. Miguel deposed Maria and proclaimed himself King, which led to the Liberal Wars, and eventually resulted in Miguel being forced to abdicate and go into exile, and Maria II being proclaimed Queen. During this same period, in Spain, the death of Ferdinand VII also saw his daughter, Isabella II, an infant at the time, proclaimed Queen. This would also lead to the First Carlist War in Spain from 1833-1839. This map was engraved by Armand Joseph Lallemand as plate no. 24 in the first edition of M. Lapie's important Atlas Universel . As this map was printed liberal sentiments within Spain were gaining popularity. This eventually led to the Progressive Biennium, in which the Progressive Party tried to replace the conservative liberalism of the Moderate Party with more radical liberalism. This is a beautiful example of American map publisher Samuel Augustus Mitchell Jr.'s 1860 map of France, Spain and Portugal, as well as the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Majorca, and Minorca. . An inset in the upper left quadrant focuses on Switzerland. Another inset map in the lower right quadrant depicts the Island of Corsica. This map also identifies various cities, towns, rivers and an assortment of additional topographical details. Map is color coded according to political boundaries with elevation rendered by hachure. The whole is surrounded by the attractive floral border common to Mitchell atlases between 1860 and 1866. One of the most attractive American atlas maps of this region to appear in the mid-19th century. Prepared by S. A. Very good. Minor overall toning. Blank on verso. Size 9 x 11 Inches. This is a fine 1852 map of Hispania or Spain under the Roman Empire by Joseph Meyer. It depicts the Iberian Peninsula under the Roman Empire from the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea, including the Balearic Islands of Ibiza, Majorca and Minorca. The Roman provinces of Tarraconensis, Baetica and Lusitania are identified. This highly detailed map notes several rivers, ancient towns, cities and other topography, with elevation rendered by hachure. Although the Romans controlled most of the Iberian Peninsula from about 218 BC, it took them close to two centuries to fully subjugate the region. This map was issued in Meyer's Zeitung Atlas . Although all the maps in this atlas are not individually dated, the title page and maps were often updated while the imprint with the date was not, causing confusion to the exact date for some of the maps. Moreover some maps in the atlas were taped in at a later date as an update to the atlas. We have dated the maps in this collection to the best of our ability. …
