Paperback. Zustand: Fair. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. The old saying used to warn that the map is not the territory. But the guerrilla architectartist-urbanists at Hong Kong-based MAP Office (Gutierrez + Portefaix) insist that the map (or the MAP) most definitely is the territory, and this exuberant book proves it.An incredibly complex, 360-page book, jam-packed with essays, interviews and over 500 color illustrations, photos, drawings, collages and more, summarizes two decades in MAP Office's evolution from architectural research to artistic intervention and cinematic theorization. It's a work of genius from working geniuses, mixing politics, installation art, humor, science fiction, multi-cultural initiatives and just plain visionary thinking. The group has rejected everything about Modernist ideology, from the idea of the pristine space or the iconic shape to the quaint thought that form might follow function. Architecture has been let out of the bag, and it's running wild. The text of this book, structured around six clusters of work, shows off a repertoire of tactics, notions, strategies, installations, sculpture and provocations accumulated through exhibitions, competitions, and festivals (including the Venice Biennale). They start in Hong Kong, migrate to the Pearl River Delta, expand to China as a whole, and then explode into Istanbul, Palestine, Thailand, New Orleans and virtual space. Is it architecture or is it art? The answer is yes.

Four pages, 12mo. Bifolium. In good condition, on aged paper, with small pinholes to both leaves and slight loss at the head of the second. Substantial first part of long letter, and hence lacking the signature. BBTI has Trelawny [for Trelawney] William Saunders at 6 Charing Cross between 1846 and 1853, and Edward Stanford's entry in the Oxford DNB records that he was an apprentice there, returning as partner in 1852 ('The partnership was dissolved by mutual consent in July 1853.'), and that it was Saunders who proposed Stanford for membership of the Royal Geographical Society. A good association and a scarce example of Saunders' handwriting, which has been verified by comparison with a specimen (which will be included with the item) in the Royal Geographical Society archives. Saunders begins by expressing his 'unfeigned respect' for Mangles' 'firm & unconquerable efforts towards the production of so grand & entire a work as "The Illustrated Geography & Hydrography," of which I have received prospectuses from the Geographic[a]l. Society on Wednesday'. (Mangles published a 'Synopsis' with London publisher John Bumpus in 1848, but there is no record that the work itself was ever published.) Saunders hopes he will not be thought 'presumptuous', or acting 'from interested motives', when he states that he has 'read through all your prospectuses with avidity & am now anxious to learn something more of your fine work, and as there is no publication name mentioned, nor any other person referred to for enquiries, I have taken the liberty of addressing you directly'. He hopes Mangles will admit, on reading the enclosed 'short address', that Saunders is also 'employing the humble capacity in which providence has placed me, to promote the study of Geography'. The prospectus of Saunders' unidentified work 'has only been printed a few days', but he has 'already obtained such support, as encourages me to persevere in the plan I have laid down'. He hopes before long that there will be 'a depot in this great centre of geographic enterprise where the maps of & from all countries y be readily obtained. The pursuit of a science which requires an accumulation of materials for its successful development must be dilatory, while the means of supplying & procuring such material is confined to private societies, or scattered amongst innumerable establishments, each having a conflicting interest.' He praises Mangles' 'unique work', which he will promote, in the hope that 'the addition of my name to the splendid "Physical Atlas" [by Alexander Keith Johnston (1804-1871)] of which i enclose a prospectus, will be esteemed as one mark in my favour.' As he does not want to allow 'feelings of restraint' to curb him in communicating with Mangles on the subject, he is glad his 'person is unknown to me, inasmuch as a previous connection in our respecti positions in society would no doubt have imbued me with an idea of distance, the chains of which would now gall me excessively.' Before the letter breaks off, Saunders discusses Mangles' intention 'to divide the whole globe into sections, just like England is divided in the maps of the Ordnance Survey, with the addition of Hydrographic detail along the shores & at sea, & both variations in scale suited to the peculiar exigencies of this undertaking'. He is not sure from the prospectus whether 'you contemplate this happy continuity & oneness of plan, though I doubt not such is your intention'. The letter ends abruptly at the foot of the fourth page, with the incomplete sentence: 'Is it not possible to describe the Hydrographic portion in continuance of the Geographic, so as to avoid '. Note: None of his letters listed on the NRA, but A2A records correspondence [as "Trelawny", confusingly] at the RGS, and has other material illustrating Saunders' importance in the history of map-making and exploration, contributions ranging from "Saunders' official map of the Australian Gold Country" to the map in "Stray leaves from.

Soft cover. Very good. Dissected and laid on linen. Stable. Additional manuscript in pencil top margin. Size 37.5 x 31.75 Inches. This large folding map of Yunnan Province, China, was prepared by British military officer H. R. Davies in 1906 for the War Office. It was the culmination of years of travel and research by Davies, aimed in particular at planning a British railway to Yunnan that could compete with the French Kunming-Haiphong Railway, then under construction. Davies' map represented a major advancement in the cartography of Yunnan at a time when the province was being eyed by both the British and French as an entry point into China and a link with their wider Asian empires. A Closer Look Covering the Chinese province of Yunnan, outlined in green, and portions of neighboring territories, including Burma and Vietnam (Tonkin), the map provides a great level of detail on the topography, toponyms, waterways, and other geographic features of the province. Although European missionaries and merchants were familiar with the major routes through Yunnan, mainly along rivers and established mountain passes (some being part of the ancient 'Tea Horse Road'), none had managed to map the deep valleys, steep cliffs, remote villages, and mountain peaks to anything approaching the level that Davies does here. Kunming is labeled here as Yunnan-fu (???), at the center towards right. An extensive glossary with terms transliterated from Chinese, Shan, and Kachin, along with a legend, appears at top-left. Ethnic groups (Shan, Lolo, Miao, etc.) are labeled in red throughout. Some areas remain unsurveyed despite Davies' exemplary efforts, and even portions of provincial borders are not entirely clear - when in doubt, Davies continues the line of a border or river with dashes. An inset at bottom-left marks out the area displayed on the main map in the broader context of East Asia. Although not apparent at first glance, the main focus of the map is on three proposed cross-border railways, two British and one French. The first potential British railway would link the existing line at Bhamo, a branch off the Mandalay-Myitkyina Railway, to Teng-yueh Ting (now Tengchong), where it would meet an existing line through Yung-Ch'ang Fu (Baoshan) to Dali (Ta-li Fu) on Erhai Lake (Erh Hai), from which more railways would need to be built to connect to Kunming. A second British line, the more ambitious and yet more likely of the two, given the terrain, would link to a just-completed line connecting Lashio (just above the inset map) with Mandalay via Pyin Oo Lwin (the summer capital), a line that includes the harrowing Goteik Viaduct, the largest railway trestle in the world when completed. The proposed line would end at Dengchuan, near Dali, where it too would require a difficult east-west line across Yunnan to connect with Kunming. The French line, the only of the three to be completed, trails south and southeast of Kunming through a border pass along the Red River at Ho-kou and Lao-kai (Hekou - Lao Cai). Davies' explorations were not exactly secret (he secured a Chinese passport for his travels), but they were very significant. After completing the map, he published the work Yün-nan the link between India and the Yangtze (Cambridge University Press, 1909), describing his travels, which covered thousands of miles within and around Yunnan. With his characteristic assiduousness, Davies calculates that about half of the lands he visited had never seen a Westerner, not even a missionary, and even less had been described in print or mapped. Historical Context Aside from its intrinsic benefits as a vastly improved map of Yunnan, Davies' map was also the product of an inter-imperial competition between Britain and France for influence in southern China and throughout East Asia. Both countries had ambitions to gain influence in China by way of neighboring colonies - the British in Burma and the French in Indochina (in the preceding years, France had conquered Tonkin and es.

Hardcover. Very good. Light wear along original folds. Size 36.5 x 25.5 Inches. A large-format c. 1960 map of Egypt under the ephemeral United Arab Republic by Abdel-Aal Mohammed Rashdan of the Cairo Drafting Office. It reflects the modernization drives of the Egyptian government led by Gamel Abdel Nasser. A Closer Look Covering the densely-populated Nile Delta, this map provides information on the country's geography and infrastructure. Provinces ( mudiriyah ??????) are color shaded for easy distinction. Paved roads, 'agricultural roads' (??? ??????), railways (main and secondary), towns and cities of various sizes and administrative functions, and airports are noted as indicated in the legend below the title. Important cultural and religious sites, including ancient Egyptian ruins, are represented pictorially and labeled, as are more recent economic projects, such as the Aswan Dam and an oil refinery near Suez. Circled numbers throughout correspond to an index of towns at the bottom-left. At left toward the top is a comprehensive table of distances between various settlements. At the bottom right is an inset map, a continuation of the main map along the course of the Nile. At the bottom left is an inset map of Egypt, officially the Egyptian region of the UAR, indicating roads from the Nile Delta to other parts of the country. The United Arab Republic The United Arab Republic (UAR), founded in 1958, was a political union between Egypt and Syria. It was a manifestation of pan-Arabism, a nascent ideology in the wake of the creation of the State of Israel and during the era of Arab countries declaring independence from the Western empires (Britain and France). The main catalyst for the UAR's creation was the 1956 Suez Crisis, in which Israel seized control of the Suez Canal with British and French support after Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser nationalized it. The broader context of the Cold War also contributed to the creation of the United Arab Republic, as Communist influence in Syria was growing, and Syrian elites reluctantly agreed that a union with Egypt was the best means to prevent a Communist coup. Officially established on February 1, 1958, the new republic was quickly beset by disagreements between Nasser and Syrian elites, especially the Ba'ath Party, which he attempted to sideline. Although Nasser was extremely popular with the public throughout the Arab world, Syrians soon felt that outsiders were taking over their country. Thus, the union only lasted until 1961, when a coup d'état in Syria led to its secession. Egypt continued to be known as the UAR until 1971. More specifically related to the content of this map, whether as the Republic of Egypt or the United Arab Republic, Nasser aimed to invest heavily in Egypt's infrastructure. With lofty ambitions, his government undertook several large-scale projects, including new railways, highways, ports, and the Aswan High Dam, built in the 1960s with Soviet assistance. Some projects, such as shifting more of the population away from the Nile Delta to new interior settlements, did not pan out, but Nasser's years in power did leave the country with the modern infrastructure that it relies on today. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by cartographer Abdel-Aal Mohammed Rashdan (??? ????? ???? ?????) of the Cairo Drafting Office (???? ??????? ???????). It is undated, but the use of 'Egyptian region' of the UAR and other details (such as the absence of the Aswan High Dam) suggests a date between 1958 and 1961. The map is quite scarce, noted in the OCLC among the holdings of the American University in Cairo and Pennsylvania State University. It appears to be based on an earlier 1957 English-language edition of the map, which was then updated and reissued regularly until 1976. The present map, however, is an example of the only Arabic edition. References: OCLC 933755848.

Soft cover. Very good. Light wear along original folds. Size 16.75 x 12.5 Inches. A scarce World War I-era map of the Portuguese colony of Macao and environs, produced by the British War Office in 1918. A Closer Look The Macao Peninsula, constituting the main part of Portugal's long-established colony off the South China coast, sits at center towards right, reflecting urban development. Fortifications and strategic points, including the historic Guia Fortress, are indicated. Other details including topography, individual buildings, and, on water, shoals, anchorages, hazards, and depths, are noted, with greater detail on the Macao Peninsula and the other islands included in the colony (Taipa, Coloane or Colowan, Green Island). Nearby islands administered as part of Guangdong Province, as well as the Chinese mainland (Xiangshan County, here as Heungshan), are similarly detailed. At top-left, an inset map displays the location of Macao relative to Canton (Guangzhou), Hong Kong, and the Pearl River Delta as a whole. Historical Context Portugal's colony of Macao was the longest-lasting foreign territory on Chinese soil, existing for more than 400 years from 1577 - 1999, despite, or perhaps because, Portugal exercised very weak control. As with other parts of Portugal's colonial empire, efforts were made in the 19th-century to shore up or even expand territorial claims and implant a modern bureaucratic administration. In the case of Macao, this included annexing the islands of Taipa and Coloane south of the Macao Peninsula, which continued to be disputed by Chinese authorities for decades, and building a causeway to Green Island (Ilha Verde). Incidentally, both Portugal and China transitioned from monarchies to republics at nearly the same time, between 1910 and 1912, and both sought to affirm their national projects by enhancing sovereignty over disputed territory: Portugal throughout its empire and China over foreign concessions, colonies, and treaty ports around its periphery. These projects were set on a collision course, with Portugal decidedly at a disadvantage, but political chaos within China and the First World War delayed Macao's reckoning. Also, Sun Yat-sen (Sun Zhongshan), the putative founder of the Chinese Republic, was somewhat well-disposed towards Macao, having been born nearby and having used the territory to raise funds and weapons for his revolutionary movement in the years before the fall of the Qing Dynasty. Subsequent Chinese leaders were either too weak to make a move on Macao, or, like Sun, clever enough to recognize that the territory presented opportunities (for trade, smuggling, capital, currency, etc.) that outweighed whatever glory would be gained from reasserting Chinese sovereignty over it. Only when this logic no longer applied, as other outlets to the world were opened along the Chinese coast in the 1980s, did China press for a return of the territory to Chinese rule. Publication History and Census This map was produced by the General Staff Geographical Section (G.S.G.S. at bottom-left) in 1918 by the British War Office, who no doubt were primarily concerned with their colony nearby at Hong Kong. The map is quite rare, only being independently cataloged among the holdings of the British Library and has no known history on the market. It appears to have been produced as a reference companion to the Macao section of Handbooks Prepared Under the Direction of the Historical Section of the Foreign Office - No. 81 (H. M. Stationary Office, 1920). References: OCLC 497586425. Cunha, L., 'Macau Between Republics: Neither War nor Peace (1914-1918)' e-Journal of Portuguese Studies Vol. 15, No. 1 (2017).

Hardcover. Excellent. Dissected and mounted on linen as issued; original boards removed but present. Size 28 x 26 Inches. This is a 1915 edition of the British War Office map of Lower Mesopotamia, the authoritative map of Central and Southern Iraq, Kuwait, and Khuzestan (Iran). This map was first issued in 1907, at which time it was considered the most accurate regional map. This edition, updated to 1915, was used by both sides in World War I (1914 - 1918). A Closer Look The map details the Euphrates and Tigris watershed, predominantly central and southern Iraq, from Baghdad to Basra and the Persian Gulf, including most of Kuwait and the Khuzestan Province in southwestern Persia. This was mostly Ottoman territory at the beginning of World War I, with Kuwait as a British protectorate. Southern Persia was a British zone of influence, based on the interests of the Anglo-Persian Oil Company. Oft Updated and Pirated The map was updated by the British War Office in June 1911, December 1915 (this example), 1916, and 1919. So excellent was this cartography that it was pirated twice by the German military: first in 1915 based on the British 1911 edition, and then in 1917 based on the British 1916 edition. It would not be the first time that combatants would go to war armed with the same maps, but it is nevertheless a remarkable instance of the phenomenon. Preparing for War The 1911 and 1915 editions are cartographically nearly identical, except that the 1915 has been updated with measurements for the heights of the banks along the Tigris and the Shatt-al-Arab. Earlier versions have the measurements in meters, but here they have been recalibrated in feet. Since the British campaign in Mesopotamia was based on a foothold in Basra and was aimed at the capture of Baghdad, the route presented by these two waterways was significant both for the movement of troops and for resupply, and knowledge of the height of the banks at different points was crucial. The German Edition At some point in 1915, the Cartographic Service of the General Staff of the German Army in Berlin produced a pirated edition of the 1911 edition of this map, and it - like the British edition it copied - would have been the best general map available to officers engaged in the theatre. Although the actual troops facing Britain during the campaign were Ottoman, the Germans actively guided and armed the Turkish side. Indeed the army defending Baghdad at the end of 1915 was commanded by the Prussian Colmar Von der Goltz, who commanded the successful Ottoman-German defense at the Battle of Ctesiphon (November 22-25, 1915), and who would besiege and ultimately capture the British army at the Siege of Kut-al-Amara (December 7, 1915 - April 29, 1916). Time To Improve The Map It is in the context of this discouraging (for the British) turn of events that the present, December 1915 edition of the map was prepared. Throughout the defeat at Ctesiphon and the Siege of Kut, the main British difficulty was resupply. Scrutiny of the map will show that between Basra and Kut, there were no rail lines or suitable roads; the terrain by land is characterized by marshland prone to flooding. Thus, this map's resurvey and more granular measurement of the rivers and their banks - the only promising route for keeping the British army at Kut in communication. (It wasn't enough.) Captain G. Bonham Carter This example of the map was bound and sold by Stanfords' (and resold by Hugh Rees in London). The label on the covers bears the owners' name, unit, and date: 'Captain G. (Gerard) Bonham Carter 3rd Bn. Royal West-Kent Regt., May 1916.' The 3rd Battalion of the Royal West Kent Regiment was a Garrison unit, stationed in the Home Counties during the war. Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Size 26 x 29 Inches. This is a 1935 British War Office edition of the Damascus sheet of the International Map of the World. The International Map of the World was a multi-national effort initiated in the early 20th century to create a uniform large-scale map of the world. Although the effort ultimately floundered and was left incomplete, many individual sheets were prepared, this being the Damascus sheet. A Closer Look The map depicts southern Syria and parts of Lebanon, Jordan, and Iraq. Damascus is situated near the left border, and Amman, Jordan, is in the lower left. Color indicates altitude. Cities and towns are labeled throughout. The International Map of the World First proposed in 1891 by German geographer Albrecht Penck, the International Map of the World was a project to create a world map at a uniform scale and to internationally agreed standards. The project was discussed at geographical conferences for the next 15 years until, at the 1909 First International Conference in London, representatives of 10 nations agreed on standards and guidelines. Over the next four years, a grid reference system was finalized. The Ordnance Survey in London hosted the Central Bureau for the Map of the World, and by 1939, 350 of the 1,000 planned maps had been completed. The United Nations took over management of the project after World War II, and progress continued into the 1950s. However, the project began to lose supporters by the mid-1960s, being criticized by some and being of 'no practical use.' UNESCO declared the project unfeasible in 1989 and stopped monitoring progress. Today, scholars have taken a more complex view of the entire project and have proposed that it be evaluated for its importance to international relations and other aspects of global life instead of simply a question of cartography. Publication History and Census This map was created by the Geographical Section, General Staff of the War Office, and published in 1935. We note a single cataloged example of the present 1935 edition in OCLC, which is part of the collection at the Bayerische Staatsbibliothek. Examples of sheet I-37 dating from between 1918 and 1935 appear in OCLC. References: OCLC 163323910.

Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Light foxing. Two printer's creases evident. Size 13.375 x 11.75 Inches. This is an 1845 General Land Office map of the Iowa Territory, covering lands west of the Wisconsin River. The 'Neutral Ground' separating the warring Sioux and Sac and Fox Indian nations dominates the upper map. Fort Atkinson, established to protect the forcibly resettled Winnebago, is labeled within the 'Neutral Ground'. Townships appear below the 'Neutral Ground', and the settlements of Iowa City, Fairfield, and Keokuck are labeled. Neutral Ground Two strips of land stretching from the Mississippi River to the upper Des Moines River (labeled here as Raccoon River) illustrate what was known as the 'Neutral Ground'. In 1830, the U.S. government decided to intervene in a war between the Sioux and the Sac and Fox. The forced peace treaty stipulated that both tribes cede a strip of land twenty miles wide extending from the Mississippi River to the Des Moines River to the U.S. government. This area was intended as a 'buffer zone' to reduce future conflict. The agreement worked well, with both tribes peacefully using the 'Neutral Ground' as hunting ground. This did not last. Minerals were discovered in modern-day southern Wisconsin in what was then Winnebago land. When miners began encroaching, the Winnebago removed them and defended their lands. Hoping to avoid further conflicted, the Federal government negotiated the cession of the Winnebago lands. The Winnebago were forcibly relocated to the 'Neutral Ground'. While this idea likely appeared sound to the government officials to organized it, the move failed to take into account the Winnebago themselves. The Winnebago had little desire to move across the Mississippi. Further, reassigning the 'Neutral Ground' placed the Winnebago between two more powerful, antagonistic nations, the Sioux and the Sac and Fox. The Sac and Fox in particular held lingering animosity toward the Winnebago from the Black Hawk War (April 6, 1832 - August 27, 1832). Fort Atkinson was established on the Turkey River to protect the Winnebago, a daunting two-regiment force that kept the tenuous peace from 1843 to 1849, when the Winnebago were again relocated, this time to Minnesota. Townships Townships are platted below the 'Neutral Ground' west of Iowa City. Some townships are marked with an 'S', indicating that they have been subdivided and sold. Those marked by solid black lines and no 'S' were surveyed or under contract. Townships marked by dotted lines were recommended to be surveyed. A Short Explanation of a Township The township was created as the measure of the Public Land Survey System, which was first widely implemented to survey the Northwest Ordinance. The Public Land Survey System allowed for the systematic surveying and mapping of any territory gained by the United States. It played a pivotal role in subsequent settlement and administration new territories and states. The work of the survey influenced American Indian removal efforts, town building, railroad grants, new settlement, and more. Moreover, the efforts of the Federal Land Survey were significant in centralizing power with the Federal Government at the expense of states. Publication History and Census This map was created for and published by the General Land Office for a report to the United States Congress in 1845. We note eleven examples of the separate map cataloged in OCLC, including at Yale University, Harvard University, the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign, the University of Iowa, Iowa State University, and the University of Oregon. Native American settlements are labeled, along with the Fort Snelling, Dubuque, Prairie Du Chien, and a Mormon settlement along the Mississippi. Numerous lakes are illustrated, along with several rivers, which have falls and lakes along their courses identified as well. Very good. Exhibits foxing. Size 22 x 22.375 Inches. This is an 1845 General Land Office map of Michigan tracking progress of government surveys in the state. The entire state is divided into townships. Symbols are used to inform on the status of the survey work. For example, work in townships near the Ohio and Indiana border is nearly complete, while surveying in the western portion of the Upper Peninsula had not started. A key explaining the various symbols used to identify survey status appears along the left border. While very little detail is provided apart from the township grid, but Michigan's extensive river network is well illustrated. Publication History and Census This map was created by the General Land Office and published in a report for the 1st Session of the 29th Congress, which ran from December 1, 1845 until August 10, 1846. Very good. Even toning. Repairs and reinforcements on the verso to marginal tears. Small hole at top-center in the plot marked 'No. 23 Archibald S. White.' Handwritten annotations in pencil provide updated or corrected information on property ownership. Size 23 x 19.75 Inches. A rare 1880 plat map of Jackson County, Texas, produced by the Texas General Land Office and printed (lithographed) by August Gast. It depicts the county on the eve of an important transformation brought by the railroad. A Closer Look Jackson County is situated midway down the Texas coast, about midway between Houston and Corpus Christi. Much of the county originally consisted of coastal prairies and the rivers and bays seen here provide access to the Gulf of Mexico. By the time this map was produced, Jackson had been in existence for nearly 50 years, having been founded in 1836 (named for Andrew Jackson) as a municipality within Mexican Texas and then as one of the original counties of the independent Republic of Texas. As such, it was an early site of settlement for members of the 'Old Three Hundred' families who purchased parcels of land from Stephen Austin's land grant in the early 1820s. As with the wider region around the old Spanish Presidio La Bahía, Jackson County had originally been home primarily to Karankawa people, who had a difficult relationship with the Spanish before being driven out of the area by settlers in the 1820s - 1850s. During the Texas Revolution, many residents fled and their farms were burned by Santa Anna's troops. Compared to a contemporary map of neighboring Calhoun County recently sold by us (CalhounCounty-texasglo-1879), there are more Anglos and less Tejanos among the landowners of Jackson County. As in Calhoun County, there does appear to have been noticeable but not absolute spatial segregation between the two groups. In this case, Tejanos mostly reside west of the Lavaca River and Anglos to the east. Unsurprisingly, some landowners owned property in both counties. Notable among the landholders indicated here are Texas founding fathers Stephen Austin and Sam Houston, both long deceased by the time this map was published, but their property had presumably been retained by descendants. Though no railroad existed at this time in the county, the International-Great Northern Railroad owned tracts of land in the county. However, it was another company, the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway, that first built a railroad there. In the mid-19th century, Texana emerged as the main town in the county, but the overall population remained small and agrarian, with as much as one-half of the county's population being enslaved, tasked with growing cotton and sugarcane. In the years immediately following this map's publication, the Italian-born railroad entrepreneur Joseph (Guiseppe) Telfener built the New York, Texas and Mexican Railway through Jackson County. The residents of Texana were ambivalent about the project because they thought it would threaten the town's maritime shipping, so a station was built to the west, closer to the Lavaca River. Edna, named for one of Telfener's daughters, quickly outgrew Texana as a result, and was made the county seat in 1883. By 1884, Texana was a virtual ghost town and today only exists as a historical site within Edna. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by the Texas General Land Office and printed by August Gast in 1880. We note it among the holdings of the University of Houston, the Library of Congress, and Texas A and M University, and it has no known history on the market. A later edition was published in 1896 and is similarly scarce. References: OCLC 171015562, 796918326 (1896 edition).

Good. Wear and toning along original fold lines. Small areas of infill along original fold lines and at fold intersections. Size 32.75 x 34.75 Inches. This is a 1954 Texas General Land Office and Eltea Armstrong map of Texas. The map features a portrait of Bascom Giles at the height of his power as head of the Texas Land Office, and just months before his fall in the Veterans Land Board Scandal. Austin, Dallas, Fort Worth, Abilene, Houston, and San Antonio, are emphasized by 'street grids' relating their relative size. Green areas highlight national forests and Big Bend National Park. Mountains in West Texas are illustrated pictorially. State parks and forests are indicated by green pine trees. Bascom Giles and The Veterans Land Board Scandal This map was published in 1954, likely months before the Veterans Land Board Scandal broke in November. Bascom Giles (the Texas General Land Office Commissioner) and several other members of the GLO used their influence to convince mostly illiterate veterans to apply to buy land under the Veterans Land Act. Giles, other GLO officers, and their businessmen associates would then pocket the money. Many of the veterans who purchased land were not even aware of the fact. The fraud spread to nine counties in south Texas. Bascom Giles (the Texas General Land Office Commissioner) and several other members of the GLO were charged with fraud and conspiracy to defraud veterans. Giles served three years in the Texas State Penitentiary and holds the distinction of being the first state elected official to go to prison for crimes committed while in office. Publication History and Census This map was created by Eltea Armstrong and published by the Texas General Land Office in 1954 during the tenure of Bascom Giles as commissioner. We note seven examples cataloged in OCLC which are part of the collections at Yale University, the University of Texas at Arlington, Baylor University, the Austin Public Library, Hardin-Simmons University, the University of Texas at El Paso, and the University of Arizona. An example is also part of the map collection of the Texas General Land Office. The map never attained wide circulation, likely due to most copies being destroyed after the scandal. Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Very slight loss at a few fold intersections. Close left margin. Size 25 x 32.5 Inches. This 1898 Matthew Hendges map of Alaska captures the region near the height of the Klondike Gold Rush. Frontier gold rushes are an integral part of American history of the 19th century and, even today, capture the imagination of those hoping to strike it rich. A Closer Look Coverage embraces territorial Alaska as well as adjacent parts of the Yukon, with gold regions highlighted in yellow and 'Gold District' boldly written across central Alaska. An inset of the Klondike (Juneau to Forty Mile Creek) appears in the upper right, with gold discoveries highlighted. Red overprinting notes overland and river routes into the notoriously inaccessible gold region. Red overprinting illustrates the same inland routes on the larger main map of Alaska, along with the 'monthly mail route' from Seattle and the steamer route from San Francisco. Other resource deposits, including coal, silver, copper, platinum, mercury, and oil, are noted. An inset in the lower left depicts the westernmost Aleutian Islands from Seguam Island to Attu. Klondike Gold Rush The Klondike Gold Rush, ignited in 1896, was a frenetic migration of prospectors to the Klondike region of the Yukon in northwestern Canada following the discovery of gold by local miners. This gold rush transformed the landscape and the lives of thousands, as over 100,000 individuals, driven by the allure of wealth, embarked on a grueling journey towards the remote wilderness, facing harsh climates, treacherous terrains, and immense hardships. Despite the arduous conditions, the promise of gold attracted fortune-seekers from around the globe, leading to the near-instant development of Dawson City and leaving a lasting legacy. Gold was discovered near Nome in western Alaska in 1899, and many prospectors left to try their luck in these new goldfields. Boomtown populations dwindled, and gold production peaked in 1903. Today, the legend surrounding the Klondike Gold Rush still beckons tourists. Publication History and Census This map was compiled and drawn by Matthew Hendges under the supervision of Harry King for the General Land Office and printed by the Norris Peters Company in 1898. Well represented in institutional collections. References: Rumsey 6402.001. OCLC 779516367.

Good. Soiling along right edge and sporadically in the margins. Creasing in top and right margin. Even toning. Size 16.75 x 20 Inches. A scarce 1879 plat map of Falls County, Texas produced by the Texas General Land Office. It provides a detailed portrait of the county roughly thirty years after its creation. A Closer Look Individual landholders are noted throughout with their plots outlined. For older plots, predating the Texas Revolution, the date of acquisition is noted. The Brazos River runs down the center of the map, dividing the county in half, while creeks and other waterways are also noted. A large arrow points to the north, indicating that the map is oriented towards the northwest. A dashed line marks the county border, with many plots straddling the line between Falls and neighboring counties. Rails through Texas The Waco and Northwestern Railroad runs roughly parallel to the Brazos on its east bank. It was planned as a means of connecting Waco with the Houston and Texas Central Railway, which linked Houston and Dallas. Though chartered in 1866, progress was slow, and the relatively short line was not completed until 1872, with the two lines meeting at Bremond, at bottom towards right, just beyond the county line into Robertson County. The choice of this location was no accident, as the land there was owned by Paul Bremond, the founder of the Galveston and Red River Railroad, which later became the Houston and Texas Central. Despite this early and notable success, Bremond's later ventures were not as fortunate and he invested most of his money into the misguided Houston East and West Texas Railway, a narrow-gauge track meant to link Houston, Texarkana, and points throughout Texas and the South, though only a small portion of it was built. Local History Sterling C. Robertson, whose descendants still held land along the river at bottom when this map was produced, was an empresario from Tennessee who received a grant from the Coahuila y Tejas legislature to establish a settlement. Known as Nashville Colony or Robertson's Colony, it encompassed a wide section of north-central Texas (some thirty modern-day counties), but its capital was in what became Falls County, at Sarahville de Viesca, near the later town of Marlin. A fort (Fort Milam) was constructed nearby along the river, just to the south of the area seen here, and another town named Bucksnort emerged in the late 1830s, offering shops and services to travelers en route to Dallas or other fairly distant destinations (like Sarahville de Viesca, Bucksnort quickly became a ghost town, explaining its absence here). Hundreds of families of settlers came to the region from Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi, but the colony's early history was beset by fighting with Native Americans and it was abandoned in the 'Runaway Scrape' during the Texas Revolution. After the revolution and union with the United States of America, Falls County was established in 1850, with a county seat at Adams. However, soon afterwards, Adams was renamed Marlin, in honor of John Marlin, an Irish-born colonist who arrived in the area in 1835 and became an alcalde under Mexican rule. Though Marlin was an early settler on the land, Thomas Chambers soon came to own the area surrounding the town and his descendants retain it here. The county is named for a waterfall that existed on the Brazos River until 1866, when a storm caused the river to change course (from the 'Old River' seen here) and a new waterfall emerged slightly upriver from the original one. Publication History and Census This map was prepared by the Texas General Land Office and printed by August Gast and Co. in 1879. We note it among the holdings of the Library of Congress, the University of Houston, and the Daughters of the Republic of Texas Library. It has no known history on the market. Very good. Size 25.25 x 34.5 Inches. A large-format 1949 survey map of the coasts, islands, and waters in the Tathong Channel off the eastern coast of Hong Kong Island, produced by the British War Office. A Closer Look The Tathong Channel (??? 'Great East Gate') is the main route for ships navigating around the eastern side of Hong Kong Island to enter Victoria Harbour. It leads into Junk Bay (Tseung Kwan O) and then to the narrow channel of Lei Yue Mun before reaching the main and busiest portion of Victoria Harbour. Aside from Tathong Point on the south side of Tung Lung Chau, Sam Kong (Sung Kong) and the Wanglan Islands appear in their entirety, with portions of Po Toi. As can be seen here, Wanglan was home to a lighthouse connected with Hong Kong Island by an underwater cable; soon after this map's publication, a weather station was also established on Wanglan. Though not primarily a nautical chart, fathoms, hazards, shoals, and other maritime features are also noted. The purple grid overlying the map corresponds to a World Polyconic Projection using the U.S. Yard Grid system, developed for the 'Southwest Pacific' region during World War II by modifying a pre-existing British grid system. Historical Context This map was one part of a 24-sheet survey map series of Hong Kong, first undertaken in 1929 - 1930 and updated periodically thereafter. This ambitious undertaking was no doubt one of the largest, if not the largest, topographical surveys of Hong Kong at the time. The updates made after the Second World War (2nd and 3rd editions) were no doubt motivated by taking stock after the city's occupation by the Japanese. But the third edition in 1949 also coincides with the Communist revolution in mainland China, which presented a serious threat to the colony. The United Kingdom was the earliest Western power to recognize the People's Republic of China, in January 1950, in a bid to protect Hong Kong. Still, it was not at all clear that Hong Kong would be safe from a Communist invasion, and Britain was hardly in a position to try to defend the colony at the time. We now know that part of the reason the Communists left Hong Kong alone is because it served a vital function as a window to the capitalist world, allowing, for instance, the evasion of a U.S. blockade to receive critical supplies during the Korean War. Though tens of thousands of refugees fled the mainland for Hong Kong in the late 1940s, the border between Hong Kong and 'red' China was quite open in the early-mid 1950s, allowing Hong Kong residents to travel to their home villages and visit relatives. Though this 'travel,' often an excuse for trading, was a thorn in the side of the Communists, who were attempting to institute a strict customs regime and control the flow of precious metals to support the renminbi , it also was an economic boon, especially to Guangdong and Fujian provinces. Publication History and Census This map was initially produced by the British War Office in 1929 incorporating surveys undertaken by the Royal Engineers. Minor corrections were added in 1939, a second edition was produced in 1945, and this third edition appeared in 1949, with assistance from the Ordnance Survey (subsequent editions were produced in 1952, 1957, and 1969). This is the 24th Sheet in a series of 24 (a diagram of the full survey is included at bottom-center). The complexities of dating the map make establishing a precise census difficult. Only the Hong Kong Baptist University and the University of Hong Kong clearly hold examples of this edition of the map, while the National Library of Australia holds the entire series, but with individual maps from different editions which are not clearly indicated in the catalog listing. Very good. Closed margin tears professionally repaired on verso. Exhibits soiling in margins but does not effect printed area. Blank on verso. Size 24.25 x 33 Inches. This is a 1934 General Directorate of Post and Telegraphs map of Guerrero (Acapulco), Mexico postal routes. Mail is delivered in three different ways in Guerrero: on foot, on horseback, or by car, all of which are depicted by red lines. Each mode of delivery is illustrated by a different type of line, allowing the viewer a better overall understanding of how mail is delivered around the state. Vertical lines are drawn at the beginning and end of each route, marking the beginning of the route (one vertical line) and the end (two vertical lines). Dashed red lines mark routes that are delivered on foot, while single solid lines trace routes delivered on horseback, and two parallel solid lines highlight routes delivered by car. Cities, towns, and villages along each of the routes are labeled. Each route is numerically identified by a four-digit number. In Guerrero, these numbers all begin with the numbers two and three. The frequency of delivery is also indicated, with 52 marking routes that are delivered once a week, 104 twice weekly, 156 thrice weekly, 313 weekdays, 365 daily, and 730 twice daily. The solid black line marks the railway between Rio Balsas and Puente de Ixtla, over which mail is delivered twice daily. Publication History and Census This map was created and published by the General Directorate of Post and Telegraphs of the Transport Office in 1934. Scarce on the market.
