Ein gutes und sauberes Exemplar. - E sist charakteristisch, daß die religiöse Historie im wesentlichen in Beispielen aus dem süddeutsch-österreichischen Raum vorgestellt wird. J. B. Zimmermann, P. Troger, J. Zick, J. W. Baumgartner, C. D. Asam, F. A. Maulbertsch und M. J. Schmidt (Kremser-Schmidt) repräsentieren die fruchtbare Tätigkeit, die viele Künstler als Freskanten und Altarmaler in den Rokokokirchen entfaltet haben. Die Auseinandersetzung mit der italienischen Barockmalerei wird in den Blättern ebenso anschaulich, wie die Loslösung von den Vorbildern des 17. Jahrhunderts. In der Portraitmalerei konnte sich der Norden besser zur Geltung bringen. Sie stand in der ersten Hälfte des Jahrhunderts ganz im Schatten der Franzosen H. Rigaud und N. de Largillière. A. Pesne vertrat am Hofe des preußischen Königs diese Stilrichtung. Aber auch der in Schweden gebürtige G. Desmarées, der Frankreich niemals besucht hat, sich aber längere Zeit bei G. B. Piazetta in Venedig ausbildete, ist in seiner Kunst von den französischen Portraitisten geprägt. Dem Genre am ehesten zugehörig, eigentlich eine eigene Gattung beanspruchend, nahm in der zweiten Hälfte des 18. Jahrhunderts die Buchillustration einen bedeutenden Aufschwung. Auch hier waren Interesse und Bedürfnis des Bürgertums, an Bildung und Kultur teilzuhaben, die Faktoren für die neuerliche Bilderflut in Büchern. J. W. Meil und D. N. Chodowiecki waren in Berlin die herausragenden Vertreter. Sie trugen mit ihren Zeichenstiften entscheidend dazu bei, die Literatur in ihrer Aufgabe als Sittenschilderung zu unterstützen.
