In den Warenkorb12mo bifolium, 4 pp. Good, on aged, laid paper. Good, on lightly aged paper. Addressed to 'My dear Charles', and from a collection of papers belonging to Charles James Manning. From the context may well be written by the wife of William Manning's eldest son Frederick (Charles's brother, as well as Cardinal Manning's). The author has 'been quite stunned with the sad & awfully sudden news' [of William Manning's death]. The author's uncle, 'Col ' agreed 'that it would alarm [Frederick] to see me [at 'Pangburn']'. Will 'go up to London early tomorrow & go straight to the City where I shall hear what has been done - I knew I could be of no use at Brighton'. 'You know you may always command my best services for any member of Fredk's family as readily as for my own; for they have been to me, as my own; but you are all so able to act, & so many in number, that I feel I am better away; & I am now, but a nervous, poor creature - the last 12 months have tried me much. [.] I feel for you all deeply, but for poor Maria [William Manning's widow] most! for they have been so inseperable [sic] - poor thing! [.]'.

In den WarenkorbSee his entry in the Oxford DNB. 2pp, 12mo. Twenty-six lines of text, in a close and disciplined hand. Signed 'Henry. E C. Archbp'. In fair condition, lightly aged, with small dap of light red ink at head of last page. Folded once. Begins: 'the Guardians of the Poor. Not a Catholic Child would they give up 24 years ago. Now all the 33 Boards give us our Children, & give us their maintenance out of the Rates. They Visit our Schools and are perfectly content: & we are on the fairest & friendliest terms. What has been done here may be done every-where, and with greater ease for here the children were in their Schools. In Parish Schools the children are in their own homes & a little help from the rate would be 1/3 of the maintenance of each child.' In the following paragraph he discusses the recipient's 'point' with regard to 'the entrance of women into politics', which he believes 'is the beginning of confusion & will end in chaos'. He feels the same about 'Girton & Girl graduates'. He is free from illness, 'but shut up for the winter'. Postscript: 'I send you a perfect copy of the Fifty Reasons'.

Bifolium. In fair condition, lightly aged, with a couple of creases. Folded twice. Signed 'H. E. Manning.' The recipient is not named. Begins: 'My dear Sir / I am going to ask of you a favour by which you would greatly oblige me if you have no objection. It is to lend me the Key of the Private Chapel belonging to you in Findon Church, that I may make a drawing with measurements of the East window, which I wish to copy for my Church. I would not ask this by a messenger if I was not pressed by the necessity of getting my work at Lavington Church finished with all speed.' He asks the recipient to entrust '[McLean?]' with the key, and undertakes to return it on the Wednesday.

In den Warenkorb6pp., foolscap 8vo. On two grey-paper bifoliums. In fair condition, on aged and worn paper. Docketted by Wiseman on the reverse of the last leaf: 'Dr Manning's Mem[orandu]m to Walpole on Reform[ator]ies'. The document (presumably copied by Wiseman expressly for Manning) is addressed to 'The Right Hon. Spencer Walpole M.P.', and is complete to the valediction, but unsigned. It begins: 'Sir | I beg leave to lay before you a subject of much importance affecting the Reformatory School for Catholic Boys at Brook Green, Hammersmith which is under my direction. | Being duly certified by the Secretary of State in accordance with the recent acts of Parliament the School is under the inspection of the Inspector of Reformatory Schools, the Revnd. Sidney Turner. | Of that gentleman's courtesy and consideration in all transactions I have had with him I desire to bear my full testimony, and at the outset to state that nothing on his part affords to me the motive of this communication.' The letter concerns an inspection by an inspector on behalf of the Committee of Privy Council on Education: 'it has been intimated that the Inspector would not personally examine Catholic boys in their religious instruction, but that such an examination might be conducted by proper persons in his presence. | This however only masks the difficulty. The ultimate judgment as to the sufficiency and character of such religious instruction is thereby still vested in the Inspector. | I forbear from drawing out in detail the obvious anomalies and inconveniences which must arise from such a practice, because I believe them to be self-evident. I am only anxious to state that to the manager of such Catholic Reformatory Schools these anomalies and inconveniences involve a principle which they are precluded in conscience from accepting.' As a consequence he proposes 'an easy mode of removing the difficulty a mode satisfactory I trust to Her Majesty's Government also, as affording a full guarantee for the due religious instruction of such R. Cathol. Reformatory Schools'. Manning's appeal is unlikely to have been met with sympathy. According to The Times (23 May 1898), Walpole had a lifelong reputation 'as a zealous protestant prone to detect Jesuitism and kindred dangers in unsuspected quarters'. From the Wiseman papers.

In den WarenkorbThe collection is lightly aged and in good condition. Letter One (12mo, 3 pp), Oxford, 1 November 1827, signed 'W: M.': Begins by saying that he will be pleased to join Charles 'in the Lodging you propose or any other more to your mind - I had not fixed upon any plan, but thought once of being at Ellis's Hotel - (the Colonial Club House, St. James St.) Your proposal, however, I like much better.' He will 'much prefer being in the Regent Street on late Nights in the Ho. of Commons [Manning was also a Member of Parliament], as I found Wimpole St. rather too far last winter.' Thanks him for the information about Mrs Lennox, apologises for his inattention to 'Mr. Connant's request'. Thanks him for sending Lord Rendlesham's game to two persons. Letter Two (12mo, 3 pp), ' Hill', 11 November 1827, signed 'W: M.' Charles 'did not appear to have heard of the Grand Signior': 'it is fortunate however that the Company escaped so well - & I am very thankful for Maria's escape'. Manning has 'seen the Duke of Wellington since Church who has given me many particulars of the engagement with the Turkish Fleet'. Discusses plans for a visit London. 'The Duke was very gracious & invited me to dinner tomorrow to meet a large party but we had made our arrangements & I was obliged to decline'. Letter Three (12mo, 1 p), 4 February 1830, signed 'W: M'. Discusses 'an accommodation to Nurse Pring to have permission to remain in New Bank Buildings & to give up her Lodging at Woolwich': 'I cannot offer her board WAges but she may partake of anything left from our Table'. Letter Four (12mo, 3 pp), Combe Bank, 20 July 1831, signed 'W: Manning'. He does not 'feel inclined to risk a Letter of so much importance to Sir Richard Jackson who may have left Scotland before it gets there'. Instructs Charles to make a purchase for Miss Elizabeth Hughes. 'As John has sent me all the Letters for Signature I shall perhaps not go up tomorrow but Henry will do so & he will take this Letter'. Charles will 'receive from Henry one of the printed particulars from Mr Christie'. Letter Five (12mo, 2 pp), Combe Bank, 21 July 1831, signed 'W: Manning'. Giving instructions for banking transactions. Letter Six (12mo, 1 p), 4 October [no year, but c. 1833], Upper Gower Street [to which Manning moved following his bankruptcy in 1831], signed 'W: M-'. Small hole caused by breaking of wafer resulting in loss to one word. Discussing his wife's age as stated on an insurance policy. Letter Seven (12mo, 1 p), 'Bank 12 o'Clock', signed 'W: M'. Marked 'private'. He has just learnt 'that Mr: Turnor has left his Widow £3000 a Year, & to Edmunda [the wife of Manning's eldest son Frederick] £1000 a year for her Life - ample provision perhaps £30,000 to each of his younger Children'. The transcription of Manning's memorial tablet is on one side of a 4to leaf of laid paper watermarked 1834. Good, with one 3 cm closed tear. Docketed in bottom left-hand corner 'Tablet erected in Sundridge Church | Febry 1836.' Praises Manning's 'meekness, purity, benevolence and unwearied endeavours for the welfare and happiness of all around him', which 'will be long remembered by an extensive circle of grateful friends, but chiefly by his own Family, who deeply feeling their bereavement, desire to record by this Tablet, their reverential and pious affection for the best of Fathers -'. This supports Cardinal Manning's evaluation of his father's character, on which doubt has been cast by the author of his entry in the Oxford DNB.

In den Warenkorb2 pages 8vo, Archbishop's House, Westminster, 23 July Letter regarding Knutsford's interview with Rev. Dr. Howley (1843 -1914) of Newfoundland that had just taken place: ". I need hardly say that I had no knowledge of his acts & words. But perhaps his interview with you is the best correction he could receive. I took him to be a man of prudence & peace. When I see him again I will do my best with him." The subject of Howley's meeting with Knutsford concerned the fishing rights of the waters around Newfoundland. Howley was very involved in what was perceived to be a great injustice to the Newfoundlanders: the favourable rights the French had over their waters since the Treaty of Utrecht (1713), a matter which rose to a level of serious political importance in 1890-91 following the signing of an Anglo-French modus vivendi. As Lord Knutsford was Colonial Secretary at this time, he would have been responsible for this matter. Given its importance to the people of Newfoundland, it's perhaps unsurprising that Howley was otherwise than "a man of prudence & peace" during his meeting with Lord Knutsford. Howley put pressure on officials throughout Europe regarding this matter, even petitioning Pope Leo XIII to intervene and his actions may well have contributed to the eventual resolution of the issue.
