Paperback. Zustand: Very Good. s.l.: Manhattan Engineer District, 1946. 42 pp. + 2 fold out maps. 26.5 x 20.5 cm. Beige stiff paper covers with black titling; staplebound. Undated, but published on June 29, 1946. Vertical line of discoloration to front cover, with some faint toning and soil to covers. Some bumping and creasing to bottom corner of front cover with some very light creasing along stapled spine. Small hole near head of front cover from a staple (no longer extant), with a resulting rust mark on first page. Small bump to fore-edge of text block near bottom corner with some resulting light creasing. Light age toning throughout. Interior clean and unmarked. Binding firm, but with some rusting to staples. Foldout maps are in excellent condition with only two short closed tears near a diagonal crease to the corner of the map of Nagasaki, which was caused by a binding error. Less than one month after the bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6th and 9th, 1945, members of the Manhattan project arrived in Japan to survey the damage of the two atomic bombs with the help of some members of the Army Air Forces. An initial group led by Colonel Stafford Warren arrived at Hiroshima on September 8th, and were then joined by a second group led by Captain Hymer Friedell, where they took measurements of radiation and photographed the destruction before moving on to Nagasaki nine days later. This survey by the Manhattan Project members is the first to be published after the bombings, and contains summaries of sustained damage and injuries, comparisons from before and after the blasts, calculations of the blasts themselves, and an eyewitness account from Father John A. Siemes, who was a professor at Tokyo's Catholic University. Siemes had been evacuated to the Novitiate of the Society of Jesus at Nagatsuke, which lies about 2 kilometers from Hiroshima. The work performed by the Manhattan Project concluded that the radiation levels after the blasts were such that they did not pose any real risk to the lives of the survey members or inhabitants, and this initial groundwork led to further surveys by teams such as the U.S. Strategic Bombing Survey. . Soft Cover. Very Good.

"I am trying to arrange a subscription for the Times and find that my newsagent cannot supply this unless an extra copy is allocated to him. I find it is essential for me to have the Times to keep sufficiently informed on what is going on. You have already been very helpful in arranging for a copy to be sent out to the British group, of which I was then in charge, at Santa Fe, New Mexico, and I would be very grateful for anything tou can do to accelerate the supply of a copy to me." He concludes with information about his newsagent. See Image.
