Zustand: Gut. 24 p. A good and very clean copy. - From the introduction: The question of what constitutes a relevant biological character and how such characters can be identified is a perennial problem that lies at the heart of many biological disciplines. To study the assumptions that at any given time informed ideas about the nature of biological characters is to reconstruct a complex web of negotiations between theoretical commitments and experimental practices. On the one hand theoretical ideas, such as the notion of adaptation by means of natural selection, the form-function complex, the principle of recapitulation, or patterns of Mendelian inheritance guide the interest of researchers, while on the other hand experimental practices and technological advances, such as histological staining techniques, methods of electro-physiological stimulation, or statistical methods of pedigree anaylisis both facilitate and limit the implementation of these theoretical ideas in empirical studies. In this paper I will focus on one particular episode in the history of the biological character concept, the theoretical synthesis of Oskar (1870-1959) and Cecile (1875-1962) Vogt. Their synthesis is one of the best illustrations of the confluence of different theoretical assumptions and experimental practices that is constitutive of every interpretation of biological characters. - Wikipedia: Oskar Vogt (6 April 1870, in Husum 30 July 1959, in Freiburg im Breisgau) was a German physician and neurologist. He and his wife Cécile Vogt-Mugnier are known for their extensive cytoarchetectonic studies on the brain. Sprache: Englisch Gewicht in Gramm: 550 MPIWG copy of the original brochure.

Original brochure. Zustand: Gut. 34 p. A good and very clean copy. - Abstract: This paper emphasizes the crucial role of variation, at several different levels, for a detailed historical understanding of the development of the biomedical sciences. Going beyond valuable recent studies that focus on model organisms, experimental systems, and instruments, we argue that all of these categories can be accommodated within our approach, which pays special attention to organismal and cultural variation. Our empirical examples are drawn especially from recent historical studies of 19th and early 20th century genetics and physiology. Based on the quasi-paradoxical conclusion that biological and cultural variation both constrains and enables innovation in the biomedical sciences, we argue that more attention should be paid to variation as an analytical category in the historiography of the life sciences. - Wikipedia: Gerald L. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book represents an effort to understand very old questions about biological form, function, and the relationships between them. The essays collected here reflect the diversity of approaches in evolutionary developmental biology (Evo Devo), including not only studies by prominent scientists whose research focuses on topics concerned with evolution and development, but also historically and conceptually oriented studies that place the scientific work within a larger framework and ask how it can be pushed further. Topics under discussion range from the use of theoretical and empirical biomechanics to understand the evolution of plant form, to detailed studies of the evolution of development and the role of developmental constraints on phenotypic variation. The result is a rich and interdisciplinary volume that will begin a wider conversation about the shape of Evo Devo as it matures as a field.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Cell biology is generally considered to have arisen after World War II and has coevolved with particular technological developments, most prominently the electron microscope. Despite extraordinary success in describing both the structure and function of cells, modern cell biology tends to be overshadowed by molecular biology, which developed in the same period. The standard fable about the origins of molecular biology is that physicists became interested in biology, and they capitalized on genetics and X-ray crystallography to discover the structure of DNA and generated explanations of biological phenomena through the close study of biological molecules and their interactions. While the origins of cell biology actually date to the 1830s, the field cohered in significant ways in 1924, with publication of the first comprehensive cytology textbook, General Cytology . This book not only treated cytology comprehensively, but it included chapters that went beyond the usual morphological considerations to include the chemical and physical activities of cells, and new techniques such as cellular microsurgery and tissue culture. General Cytology represented a new era of multi-perspectival cell biology, and it now serves as the inspiration for this work, which narrates the evolution of cell biology and provides a multi-disciplinary exploration of the long trajectory of cell biology and its import in shaping biological understanding.

orig.cloth. 24x15cm, vii,569 pp., An ink mark to top page-edge. Weighs 1200 grams. "This work brings together historians, philosophers, sociologists, and biologists to explore the history of the idea that embryological development and evolution are linked. Although we now know that ontogeny ( individual development) does not actually recapitulate phylogeny ( evolutionary transformation), contrary to Ernst Haeckel's famous dictum, the relationship between embryological development and evolution remains the subject of intense scientific interest. In the 1990s a new field, evolutionary developmental biology (or evo-devo), was hailed as the synthesis of developmental and evolutionary biology. In "From Embryology to Evo-Devo", historians, philosophers, sociologists, and biologists offer diverse perspectives on the history of efforts to understand the links between development and evolution. After examining events in the history of early twentieth century embryology and developmental genetics - including the fate of Haeckel's law and its various reformulations, the ideas of William Bateson, and Richard Goldschmidt's idiosyncratic synthesis of ontogeny and phylogeny - the contributors explore additional topics ranging from the history of comparative embryology in America to a philosophical-historical analysis of different research styles. Finally, three major figures in theoretical biology - Brian Hall, Gerd Muller, and Gunter Wagner - reflect on the past and future of evo-devo, particularly on the interdisciplinary nature of the field. The sum is an exciting interdisciplinary exploration of developmental evolution" - publisher's Some rubbing. VG., dustwrapper.
