[]"Durch Alfred Stevens lernte sie 1869 Édouard Manet kennen, dessen einzige Schülerin sie wurde. In dieser Zeit entstand auch Manets Porträt Eva Gonzalès. Hierin ist sie sitzend an der Staffelei vor einem Blumenstillleben dargestellt. 1870 reichte sie mit dem Gemälde Der Hornist erstmals ein Werk zum Pariser Salon ein, wo es erfolgreich aufgenommen wurde. Das Gemälde zeigt, wie viele Bilder Gonzalès aus dieser Zeit, den Einfluss durch Manets Arbeiten. Dunkle Farben prägten zunächst ihre Palette und einen starken Helldunkelkontrast kennzeichnete diese frühen Arbeiten. Der Hornist gilt als ihre künstlerische Antwort auf Manets Gemälde Der Pfeifer. In den Folgejahren nahm sie wiederholt am Pariser Salon teil.

To a friend expecting him to join him for a visit of the Anastasi exhibition: "Je vous attends pour aller à l'exposition Anastasi". Hoping to borrow a belt and rifle: "Ayez donc la complaisance de me prêter le ceinturon qui est dans votre antichambre et un fusil [.]". - Two calling cards with the address "4 rue St Pétersbourg", the place of Manet's atelier from 1872 to 1879, with invitations to come by on Sunday afternoon ("Venez dimanche à l'atelier à 4-4 ½ au plus tard") or right away ("Passez de suite chez moi").

63 : 104 mm. Rare 2.5 x 4 carte-de-visite portrait of Manet in a bust-length pose by F. Mulnier of Paris, signed and inscribed in ink on the reverse to his student, Eva Gonzales, "A Mlle. Eva, E. Manet." In fine condition.The recipient, Éva Gonzalès (1849-1883), entered Manet's studio in 1869, when she became his student. Eva's presence brought Manet out of his shell. Manet is said to have begun a portrait of her at once, which was completed in March 1870 and exhibited as Mlle E. G., at the Paris Salon the same year. Manet's work received critics as Mlle E.G. is presented in a stiff posture and an expensive dress, clearly unfit for creating artwork. Gonzalès was Manet's only formal student and modeled for several other painters of the Impressionist school. Her work as a painter was celebrated by Salon reviewers for her inherent intuition and her intrinsic technical skill. In 1879 she married Henri Guérard, a graphic artist and Manet's engraver.
