In den WarenkorbSee the description of Caine's political views in his entry in the Oxford DNB. He began as a communist, but became a Christian Socialist, and a supporter of the Liberal Party on the mainland of Britain (he was a member of the Isle of Man House of Keys from 1901 to 1908) and a follower of the Church of England. The present item would appear to relate to the 'impassioned propaganda' that Caine published in the Daily Telegraph from September 1914 (ODNB). It is 1p, 4to. It is in fair condition, lightly aged and discoloured, with minor traces of mount on the blank reverse, and with central horizontal and vertical folds. Written in Caine's distinctive tiny hand. A column on the left-hand side of the page is headed 'Downfall of a Nation / Please make the following corrections', while the right-hand side carries 'With Sir Hall Caine's compts'. There are four corrections, to be made to the 'Second', 'Fifth', '6th' and 'Concluding Article': 'Second Article / 2nd. Col: 4th paragraph / Read Provisional Government instead of Provincial / Fifth Article / 1st Col 4th paragraph / Spell / Vladimir / Kalouga / Ukraina / 6th Article / 2nd Col / 22 line / Read - / The American plan was to take a million children & provide for them for one month, & the British plan was to provide for two hundred thousand on the Border etc / Concluding Article / last col / 3rd paragraph / read / Constituent Assembly / instead of Constitutional'. Soft cover. Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Text on verso. Small strips of double sided tape on corners of verso. Size 22 x 17 Inches. This is a 2013 map of Black Rock City, Nevada, the temporary city created by the annual Burning Man Festival. Brilliantly colored and designed in a style reflecting the 'radical self-expression' defining the event, the map is both a guide and a work of art. A Closer Look The map covers Black Rock City, a series of concentric arcs of named 'streets' (1.5 miles in diameter) centered around the Burning Man effigy that pass between the festival's various art installations, theme camps, and the campers and other vehicles of the festival-goers. The street names reflect the values of the festival, including the annual theme, which in 2013 was John Frum and Cargo Cults in Melanesian cultures. The city even includes a bus depot and a temporary airport, which has been recognized by the Federal Aviation Administration since 2009. The map's background is a collage of magazine clippings, roughly matching the hue of the festival's desert landscape, with numbers and text written on them; the intended message appears to reflect the anti-consumerist ideals of the festival. The verso includes a list of several hundred theme camps and villages, as well as basic information on medical care, food and refreshments (especially ice), law enforcement (handled by the Bureau of Land Management and Pershing County Sheriff's Office), and community policies and guidelines. Burning Man Originally started at Baker Beach in San Francisco, Burning Man is an annual event that since 1990 takes place in late August in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada (the exact location has changed somewhat several times), where tens of thousands of people gather to create a temporary city called Black Rock City. It is centered around community, art, self-expression, and self-reliance. The event, defined by mass-scale spontaneous artistic creation, culminates with the burning of a large wooden effigy known as 'The Man.' Originally drawing participants from countercultural, underground, and Bohemian circles, the event has in recent years become wildly popular, attracting tens of thousands of attendees, and struggled to maintain its founding principles in the process. The 2013 festival marked a significant increase in the number of attendees in previous years, just shy of 70,000, making it the largest Burning Man up to that date. Since 1998, the festival organizers have published an art map that is as beautiful as it is informative. Publication History and Census This map was issued by Black Rock City LLC, which later the same year reorganized as the Burning Man Project in San Francisco. Several individuals are listed in the 'Map and Guide Credits' section on the verso, including Lisa Hoffman, a San Francisco-based artist who worked as a map designer for Burning Man between 2001 and 2015, Terry Schoop and Erika O'Connor, long-time employees of Black Rock City LLC/ the Burning Man Project, and Rod Garrett, who had passed away in 2011, but who had first laid out the temporary city created by the festival in its distinctive horseshoe shape in 1997. Though this map would have been distributed widely among festival participants, its ephemeral nature means that few survive. The OCLC notes a single example of this 2013 edition, held by Harvard University. References: OCLC 863037970.

Soft cover. Very good. Light wear along original fold lines. Toning. Accompanied by a photo quiz made by Look Magazine. Size 21.75 x 10.25 Inches. This is a 1948 map of the 'Man and the Atom' exhibit, illustrating the America's brief Atomic Crase. The exhibit was assembled for the New York City Golden Anniversary Exposition at the Grand Central Palace. It was the most comprehensive atomic exhibition presented to the public up to that time. A Closer Look The map begins at the entrance to the exhibit and presents a confused attendee holding an 'Atomap'. Footprints illustrate the proposed path through the exhibition, and cartoons mark displays. Below and surrounding the map on three sides is a legend connecting cartoons with displays, noting each display's name and sponsor. The map ends with the same attendee exiting the exhibition with a huge smile, beaming at the 'Atomap.' 'Man and the Atom' 'Man and the Atom,' was the 'most comprehensive atomic energy exhibit ever presented to citizens' (at least up to that point). The atomic energy exhibition featured a Van de Graff generator. Another display included a demonstration in a lead cube where dimes were temporarily turned radioactive by turning the silver in the dimes into cadmium. Other exhibits included a Geiger counter and illustrations of the medical uses of radioactive isotopes. High school students volunteered as guides, giving short, prepared speeches about the exhibits. General Leslie Groves, the former head of the Manhattan Project, helped design the exhibit and visited it a week after it opened. The Atomic Craze The atomic craze in America during the 1940s was a cultural phenomenon that emerged in the wake of the development and use of atomic bombs during World War II (1939 - 1945). The public's fascination with nuclear energy and its potential was fueled by a mix of awe, fear, and curiosity. This craze was reflected in various aspects of American life, from science fiction movies and comic books featuring atomic-powered superheroes to the incorporation of 'atomic' themes in marketing, architecture, and consumer products. The atomic bomb's role in ending the war gave it an almost mythical status, leading to a widespread interest in all things nuclear, whether it was the promise of limitless energy or the looming threat of atomic annihilation. This period also saw the beginnings of the Cold War, which further intensified the public's fixation on atomic power as both a symbol of progress and a harbinger of potential doom. New York's Golden Jubilee Celebration In 1948, New York City celebrated its Golden Anniversary - 50 years since the 1898 consolidation of the five boroughs into Greater New York. Grover A. Whelan served as Chairman of the Mayor's Committee for the Commemoration of the Golden Anniversary, which organized the event. It was held at the Grand Central Palace, a 13-story building between 46th and 47th Streets that served as New York's main exhibition hall from 1911 until 1953. The exhibition was open from August 23, 1948, until September 19, 1948. The entry fee was 50 cents, and the exhibition filled the first 4 floors of the Grand Central Palace. The exhibition was meant to display the inner workings of their city government to New Yorkers. Displays highlighted the functions of 102 city departments, including the Police Department and the Department of Water Supply. WNYC broadcast from the first floor. A 'fashion pageant' took place daily, and 120 models presented fashion from 'every price point.' Publication History and Census This 'Atomap' was created for visitors to the atomic energy exhibition at New York's Golden Jubilee exhibition at the Grand Central Palace. This is the only known cataloged example.
