Provenance: Collège Royal de Versailles (bookplate to front-pastedown printed in Latin with donee "Oscar Leevy(?)" and date 18 Aug. 1810 added in manuscript). A fine copy in untouched binding. ---- RARE FIRST EDITION of Malus' prize-winning work on double refraction. Malus took part in the Egyptian expedition as an engineering officer. Director of Studies at the Ecole Polytechnique in 1811, he died the following year at the age of thirty-seven. Malus took up the work of Huygens, Newton and Wollaston. He deduced Huygens's law by means of the principle of the least action. Also of great importance is his law for the relative intensities of the ordinary and extraordinary rays. After a century of discussion, his research led to the law on the intensity of polarized light that bears his name. He studied the polarization of light by reflection and showed that his theory of double refraction was compatible with the principle of least action and the corpuscular hypothesis. In-4 de 302 pp., 3 planches h.-t. Demi-chagrin vert, dos orné. (Reliure de l'époque.) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - First edition of this important memoir which contains the author's discovery of polarization of light by reflection. On 4 January 1808, the French Institute "proposed a prize which required an experimental and theoretical explanation of double refraction. The French 'Newtonian' scientists hoped that Malus would find a precise and general law for double refraction within the framework of an emission theory of light. Malus was a skilled mathematician and during 1807 he had carried out experiments on double refraction. By December 1808 Malus had finished his experimental investigations, which verified the Huygenian law. What remained was a theoretical deduction of the law. In January 1809, Laplace published a memoir in which he deduced Huygens' law within the framework of Newtonian mechanics, using the principle of least action, and Malus considered this an insolence which deprived him of the priority. In 1810 Malus won the prize for his 'Théorie de la double réfraction'. Here he deduced the law following the same method as Laplace, by means of the principle of least action. Malus won the prize therefore mainly because of his original experimental researches and his discussion of the short-range forces that produce double refraction. Also of great importance was his law for the relative intensities of the ordinary and extraordinary rays." -D.S.B., IX, p. 73. Schuh's Annotated Bio-Bibliography : "Scarce." Malus was a major of the engineers corp that served under Napolean in his expedition to Egypt and Syria. He was among the first students to recieve a scientific education at the École Polytechnique where he was first introduced to optics. He later taught at the Ecole. Spine has been rebacked conserving a part of the original, the endpapers renewed. Ex libris gilt on the first board: Maxime de Brane. A fine copy, with large margins. -.

Leipzig, Johann Ambrosius Barth, 1809. Without wrappers as issued in "Annalen der Physik und der Physikalischen Chemie. Hrsg. Ludwig Wilhelm Gilbert", Bd. 31, Drittes Stück. Titlepage to vol. 31. Pp. 225-336 a. 1 engraved plate. (Entire issue offered). Malus's papers: pp. 225-234 a. pp. 286-294. Wollaston's papers: pp. 235-251 a. pp. 252-262 a. Erläuterungen von Gilbert pp. 263-273. Laplace's paper: pp. 274-285. First apperance in German of these importent papers on the refraction and double refraction of light. The papers by Malus is his first two papers on the refraction of light and Laplace's paper is the memoir in which he commented Malus' paper and Huygen's refraction law. "In 1788 Haüy found experimentally that Huygen's law was true only in certain special cases, but in 1802 Wollaston found experimental evidence for the Huygenian construction (the second Wollaston paper offered). In "Mémoire sur la mesure du pouvoir réfringent" (the first paper offered) Malus showed that Wollaston's experiments were incomplete, and so the French corpuscularian physicists did not trust Wollaston's results. They thought, moreover, that Wollaston was associated with Tmomas Young and therfore with the new wave hypothesis. In this situation the Institute on January 1808 proposed a prize which required an experimental and theoretical explanation of double refraction. The French "Newtonian" scientists hoped that Malus would find a precise and general law for double refraction within the framework of an emission theory of light. Malus was a skilled mathematician and during 1807 he had carried out experiments on double refraction. Folio. 1 p. and four lines on bifolium. List of expenses for extensive fortification works executed in June, 1800 on Roda island ("isle de Raouda") located on the Nile in Cairo. The total costs, including the wages of a water carrier and a cameleer, amouted to 72,848 francs that were comfortably within the budget of 84,000 francs. - After the assassination on 14 June 1800 of General Jean-Baptiste Kléber, who had been in command of the "Armée d'orient" since Napoleon's departure, the collapse of the French occupation of Egypt was imminent. The Anglo-Ottoman offensive started in March 1801 and reached Cairo by May. On 22 June the French garrison under Augustin Daniel Belliard surrendered and withdrew to Alexandria. The siege of Alexandria from 17 August to 2 September put an end to the Egyptian campaign with the remaining French troops, including Malus, being repatriated to France on British ships according to the terms of the capitulation agreement. - Étienne-Louis Malus was trained to become a military engineer at the École royale du génie de Mézières and the École Polytechnique in Paris. In 1796 he joined the Engineers Corps of the revolutionary army and quickly ascended the ranks. His scientific career started during the Egyptian campaign when he became a member of the newly founded Institut d'Égypte. Malus' mathematical work was almost entirely concerned with the study of light; he is known for Malus's law, giving the resultant intensity, when a polariser is placed in the path of an incident beam. In 1810 Malus was elected into the Académie des Sciences. That same year the Royal Society of London awarded him the Rumford Medal. - Well preserved with small pinholes along left hand edge of the document.

A summary of fortification and building costs with the corresponding budgets certified and signed by Malus. 8vo. 1½ pp. on bifolium. Followed by 1½ pp. by his wife Louise-Nicole-Charlotte. To Henri Bertrand, father of Henri-Gatien Bertrand (1773-1844), relaying news about his son in Egypt from Napoleon Bonaparte's younger brother Louis. Malus writes that he just left from visiting Louis Bonaparte who instructed him to tell Bertrand that his son, who would eventually become Aide-de-camp to Napoleon Bonaparte, was promoted commander of the fortifications in Cairo. On his own behalf Malus expresses great satisfaction to know of his son's friendship with such a distinguished officer. Louis Napoleon had offered to forward Betrand's letters to Egypt therefore Malus sends him Napoleon's and his own address in Paris. - In an attachment to the letter written in Chantilly and dated to the 12 Germinal, Malus's wife Louise-Nicole-Charlotte adds that Louis Bonaparte's offer to forward letters via his brother is very valuable to her, since all previous attempts to communicate with her son had failed. She promises to pass on any information about Henri-Gatien Bertrand that might reach her and expresses her hope that the recipient would do the same regarding her son. - Since the decisive Battle of the Nile from the 1st to the 3rd of August 1798 the British Royal Navy had reestablished its dominance in the Mediterranean. The French "Armée d'orient" in Egypt was subsequently cut off from supply and most communication. The letter is a testimony to the dramatic effects of the loss of the French Mediterranean fleet on Napoleon's Egyptian campaign. - Anne-Louis Malus Dumitry's son Étienne-Louis Malus was trained to become a military engineer at the École royale du génie de Mézières and the École Polytechnique in Paris. In 1796 he joined the Engineers Corps of the revolutionary army and quickly ascended the ranks. Malus's mathematical work was almost entirely concerned with the study of light; he is known for Malus's law, giving the resultant intensity, when a polariser is placed in the path of an incident beam. - With five miniscule holes; otherwise very good condition.
